JOHN J. ROGERS, OF GREAT BARRINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Application filed May 15, 1912. Serial No. 697,538.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. Roenns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Barrington, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a door securer in which a holding bar is employed and is adapted to engage the latch opening of a door, and said holding door having a locking member slidable thereon and adapted to engage a door to effectively prevent opening of the same. i
The invent-ion also contemplates providing a door securer which engages the door in such a manner as to prevent any possibility of scratching or marring the same thus preserving the general appearance thereof.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, preferred and ractical embodiments being shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure l is an end elevation of a door showing a preferred form of the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the holding bar used in connection with this invention. Fig. 4: is aperspective view of the locking member employed in the form illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of a door showing a modified form of the invention applied thereto. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking member used in connection with the form illustrated in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the wedge plate carried by the locking member illustrated in Fig. 6.
Referring to the accompanying drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, 10 indicates a door frame having a door 11 mounted therein, said door being provided with the usual ordinary form of latch which is adapted to engage the latch opening 12 in the door frame 10. WVhen it is desired to lock the door 11 in a closed position the lateral extension 13 of the holding bar 14 is inserted in the latch opening 12, said holding bar being adapted to extend laterally at right angles to the door frame 10 and has its flat portion 15 abutting the side of said frame. The door is then swung into a closed position, the latch thereof engaging the flat portion 15 and then the latch opening 12. The locking member 16 is formed from a single strip of metal and is provided on its longitudinal edges intermediate the ends thereof with extensions 17 which are bent upon the main portion of the locking member to provide grooves which are adapted to engage the flat portion 15 of the hold-- ing bar 14. The outer end of the locking member 16 is reduced as indicated at 18, said outer end being provided on its longitudinal edges with laterally extending flanges 19 which are arranged in parallel relation to form a guide channel for the reduced threaded end 20 'of the holding bar 14. When the locking member 16 is mounted upon the holding bar 14 the groove formed by the extensions 17 will engage the longitudinal edges of the flat portion 15 of the said holding bar and thereby permit said locking member to slide thereon. The locking member 16 is provided at its inner end with a door engaging flange 21 having a buffer 22 secured to its abutting surface, said door engaging flap 21 extending in opposite direction from that of the flanges 19 of said locking member. lVhen the locking member is at its innermost position and the buffer 22 is in engagement with the door, a wing nut 23 is threaded upon the end 20 of the holding bar and is caused to engage the outer end of the locking member 16 thus securely retaining said member in a locking position and preventing the door from being opened. In order to disengage the locking member from the door the nut 23 is first removed and said member is then slid outwardly from engagement with the holding bar which operation will permit of the door 11 against being opened.
Referring now to Figs. 5 and 7 inclusive of the drawings it will be seen that the holdthe reduced threaded end of the holding bar 24. The inner end of the locking member 26 is provided with a laterally extending flange 31 which projects in opposite directions from the flanges 28. A wedge plate 32 has the edges of its flange engaging portion 33 bent about the edges of the flange 31 as indicated at 34 in order to secure said wedge plate 32 to the locking member. When the member 26 is in a locking posit-ion, the
wedge plate 32 will be interposed between the door 11 and frame 10 thus providing an additional locking means for the said door.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a. door securer which is simple in construction, durable, and eifective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a holding bar adapted for engagement with the latch opening in a door frame, a locking member adapted for slidable engagement with said holding bar, the inner end of said locking member being provided with a laterally extending flange, a wedge plate carried by said flange and adapted to be inserted between a. door and door frame, and means carried by said holding bar for retaining said locking member in a locking position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a holding member adapted for engagement with a door frame, a locking member adapted for slidable engagement with said holding member, wedging means carried by said locking member and adapted to be inserted between a door and door frame, and
means carried by said holding member for retaining said locking member in a locking position.
3. A device of the class described comprising a holding bar, a locking member provided with longitudinal grooves for engaging said holding bar, the outer end of said locking member being provided with a channel for the reception of said holding bar, the inner end of said locking member having a laterally extending flange, a wedge plate carried by said flange and adapted to be inserted between a door and door frame, and means carried by said holding bar for retaining said locking member in a locking position.
4. A device of the class described comprising a holding member having a flat portion provided with a lateral extension adapted to engage the latch opening in a door frame, a locking member having a flat surface for a major portion of its length, said flat surface having grooves formed upon its longitudinal edges and adapted for slidable contact with the longitudinal edges of the fiat portion of said holding member, said looking member being also provided at its outer end with a lateral extension forming an open guide channel of relatively narrow width for receiving a portion of said holding member, and means carried by said holding member for retaining said locking member in a locking position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. noonns.
