Be it known that I, Josnrr-I WINDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Window Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of show cases, but more particularly to a fastener for securely holding together and in proper position the contiguous edges of two plates of glass.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fastener for show cases, show windows or the like which is so constructed and arranged that all tendency to break the glass on (iiightening the fastener is entirely obviate A further object of my'invention is to provide a fastener of this class which can be applied to plates of glass of any thickness.
A further object of my invention it to provide a fastener of this class which will allow for any degree of adjustment without pressing against the glass or in any way tending to grasp the same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fastener of this class which allows for tightening the connecting bar without causing any pressure on the glass.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fastener of this class which cannot be removed from the outside of the show case or show window.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fastener of this class which cannot work loose on the inside of the window or show case by the jar of doors or the like.
l/Vith all these objects in view my invention consists in the novel arrangement of the fastener; and my invention consists particularly in the construction which provides for tightening and locking the connecting bar without exerting any pressure on the glass.
My invention also consists in certain other novel details of construction and in combinations of parts, all of which will be first fully construction and I described and afterwards specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the fastener applied to two plates of glass. 2 is an edge view showing the fastener in operative position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing one of the fasteners and a portion of one plate of glass in section. Fig. 4 is an elevation of one of the bolts. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the loose washers, and id ig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the bolts, locking nuts and loose washer.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which:
1 and 2 indicate two plates of glass to be fastened together, and 3 indicates the fastener. Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that the fastener 3 comprises two bolts 4 having heads 5, said bolts being threaded and being provided with a long longitudinal slot 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
7 indicates the connecting bar which, as shown in Fig. 3, passes through the slot 6 in each of the bolts 4.
8 indicates a threaded locking nut which, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is adjacent the inner surface of the glass plates.
9 indicates a loose washer which, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided with a transverse groove 10, the bore or opening 11 of said washer bemg of such size as to permit it to slide freely over the bolt 4:; and 12 indicates a threaded locking nut adjacent the loose washer 9 and designed to lock said washer on the bolt as shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus fully described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: After suitable holes have been drilled through the glass plates to receive the bolts 4 the first locking nut 8 is threaded on each of the bolts 4 to such an extent as to prevent all binding or undue pressure against the inner surface of the plates of glass, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The connecting bar 7 is then passed through the longitudinal slot 6 in each of the bolts 4; the loose washer 9 is then placed on each of the bolts 4 in such manner that the transverse groove 10 in said washer registers with the connecting bar 7 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3; the second locking nut 12 being then threaded on the bolt as shown in the drawing. The plates of glass being set up in their proper relative positions and the connecting bar 7 being adjusted in order to maintain the plates in their proper relative position the first locking nut 8 is adjusted on the bolt 4 in such manner as to prevent all undue pressure on each of the plates of glass. When this has been accomplished and the connecting bar 7 properly adjusted the second locking nut 12 is set up tightly against the loose washer 9, thus looking the connecting bar 7 rigidly between the groove 10 in the loose washer and the con- .tiguous face of the first locking nut 8, as
clearly shown in the drawing. It is therefore evident that any degree of pressure can be applied to hold the connecting bar 7 rigidly in position without exerting any pressure of the first locking nut 8 against the inner surface of the plate of glass. By this construction I am enabled to apply any degree of pressure against the connecting bar 7 without danger of breaking the glass, and to such an extent that the fastener will not work loose from the jar of doors or the like; while it is also evident that the fastener can not be removed from the outside as it is impossible to rotate the bolts 4 while the connecting bar 7 is in operative position therein.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A fastener of the character described, comprising two bolts, each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot, a locking nut on each side of said bolts, a connecting bar arranged to pass into the said slots in the said bolts, a loose washer having a transverse groove thereon arranged to be passed on each of said bolts, the said groove in each of said Washers registering with the said connecting bar, and a locking nut for said bolt to lock said washer firmly in position and for the purpose of maintaining pressure against the said connecting bar to hold same rigidly in position within each of said bolts, substantially as described.
2. A fastener of the character described,
comprising vided with a longitudinal slot, a connecting bar arranged to enter the slot in each of said bolts, a loose washer arranged to be passed on each of said bolts and to engage said con necting bar, and a locking nut for each of said bolts for engagement with said loose washer on each of said bolts to hold each of said washers firmly in engagement with said connecting bar, substantially as described.
3. A fastener of the character described, comprising two bolts, each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot, a connecting bar for entering the slot in each of said bolts, means on each of said bolts for engagement with said connecting bar for locking the same firmly in position, and means on each of said bolts to take up the pressure exerted on said connecting bar, substantially as described.-
4. A fastener of the character described comprising two bolts engaged to be passed through the objects to be fastened together,
each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot, a connecting bar arranged to enter the said slot in each of said bolts to lock each of said bolts against rotation, means on each of said bolts for engagement with said connecting bar, and further means on each of said bolts for securely locking said connecting bar in position.
5. A fastener of the character described, comprising two bolts, a connecting bar for connecting said bolts together, means for applying and maintaining pressure on said connecting bar to hold same rigidly in position, and means on each of said bolts for relieving the objects to be fastened together from the pressure applied and maintainedon the said connecting ar, substantially as described.
