Description

A. MONTGOMERY.
COLLAR.
APPLICATION nun) APR. 6, 1910.
1,057,259. Patented Mar. .25. 1913.
UNITED STATES, imm- QFFICE- ARCHIB ALD MONTGOMERY, or New YORK, N.-Y.
' 1 COLLA Specification ofietters Patent.
To all whom, it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD MONT- GOMERY, a citizen-of the United States, andresident of New York city, in the county of Kings and State of ,New York, have in-' vented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which thefollowing is.
a specification.
ous efforts have heretofore been made to provide a. substitute for one of the closed slot end button holes of ordinary type, in order that the collar may be attached to the front shirt stud at all, times easily and without force being required to pull the second end button-hole over the stud after the first end is in place. In doing away with the closed slot button-hole, as for example by substituting a slot open' at one end among the necessary requirements it is to be provided, that the shirt' stud may be inserted in the open end of the slot without bending the collar at or nearthe slot; that the open slot may be concealed from view when the collar is in position; that the structure of the collar may not be weakened so that it will be likely to bend or twist and fail to maintain its adjusted position; that the stud may be readily secured in and removed from the open slot; and thatthe stud may be firmly positioned a ainst slipping,,out of the slot when the col ar is in position. While the above stated requirements have been met in part it is the object of my invention to provide a collar wherein there is substituted for one of the closed sl'ot end button-holes an open slot of novel form and removed when it is so desired to do. slot is concealedfrom view when the collar is in place and the structure of the collar is of necessary and desired strength.
Having thus described my invention and the objectsto. be secured thereby, I will describe in detail a particular form of embodiment thereof in connection. with the accom panying drawing, wherein there is shown a view in elevation of the front ends of a turn-over collar provided at one end with an open slot embodying my invention.
As. shown in the drawing one-end A of a turn-over collar, which is that end provided with-an extended flap and customarily secured in place afte r the other endB, is pro- 'vided with a slot 1 having one end open, the entrance, 2 to the slot bemgsubstantiallyparallel with the upper and lower edges of the collar and located on the end edge of In the :manufacture of .-coll a rs,- mo re especially those of the fold-overtype, var1-' the'extended flap ,of the collar band. The slot- 1 extends inwardly of the end of the collar .at the same time curving downward until at a desired point, it is again directed toward the end of the collar and joins a terminal stud seat-or hole 3 which is preferably round as shown. This stud hole or seat is located in substantially the same position as would be the outer end of a closed slot button hole were such form used, this position giving the desired adjustment of the collar when in place. The open end or entrance 2 of the slot 1 is comparatively bro'ad, thesides of the slot converging as it extends inward and downward until at that port-ion 4 of the slot adjacent the stud I Patented Mar. 25, 1913.. a lication n April 1910. Serial-No. 553,679. v
contiguous. The inner endof the slot 1 in the form shown joins the stud hole below the central line thereof and preferably at one side. The portion of the collar band through which the slot 1 passes is preferably reinforced to a desired extent by an additional thickness of material, a reinforced portion being indicated in dotted lines and denoted C.
i It will readily be seen that after the end B of the collar has been secured in position on thestud, the end A may be brought over and as the extended flap of the band of the collar is inserted under the turn-over of the end B, the stud may readily pass into the entrance of'the slot and be guided into position in the stud hole or seat, a minimum elfort and slight degree of care being necessary to effect the entire operation. The stud being once positioned in the stud holeor seat its accidental removal therefrom is prevented both by the fact thatthe end of the collar must. be pushed slightly upward since the slot joins the stud hole preferably below the central line thereof and by reason of the contiguous sides of the slot adjacent the stud hole. It may as readily be seen that a slight directed movement of the collar, such as would not accidentally occur, will serve to unseat the stud and cause it to readily pass out of the slot. The natural strain on the collar when in place tends both to hold the stud inposition in the stud hole and to assist inits passage out of the slot when unseated.
While I have herein shown a form of collar embodying my invention it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that changes and modifications maybe made in carrying out the same without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the claim hereto appended.
I claim:
A turned-down lock-front collar having the usual locking tab',. said tab having a buttonhole comprising a slit extending' inwardly throu h the vertical edgeof'the free end of the 'ta and thence downwardly and reversely curved toward the free end, and a recess located at the end of said slit for the reception of the shank of a collar button.
Signed at-New York city in the county of New York and State of New York this 30th day of March A. D; 1910.
