MII-IAIL ALEXANDRESCU, OF BUCHAREST, ROUMANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR COMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 25, 1911.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913. Serial No. 662,521.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MIHAIL ALEXAN DRESCU, subject of the King of Roumania, and residing at Bucharest, Roumania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in or Relating to Attachments for Combs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to combs, more specially to the so-called scurf combs which serve for removing scurf, dandruff and other impurities from the hair.
The combs at present in use have the drawback that the scurf or other particles removed by the combing operation are liable to drop back on to the hair or to be otherwise scattered so that the combing is not performed in a hygienic manner and does not effect the desired cleanliness.
The object of the present invention is to obviate this drawback by the provision of one or more receptacles adapted to be attached to the comb and provided with a yielding material at the inlet or entrance. These receptacles or retainers are so designed as to retain the scurf or other impurities removed by the comb and to prevent their dropping back upon the hair or any other lace. p By the present improvements the combing and cleaning operation may be effected more quickly and effectively than heretofore and the disadvantage of the scurf or other impurities becoming scattered upon the clothes or other parts is removed.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross section through a scurf comb provided with two retainers. Fig. 2 is a plan partly in section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the front edge portion of the retainer shown in detail on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a plan corresponding to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view of the comb shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a side view illustrating a modified arrangement of the retainers. Fig. 7 is a side view partly in section showing a further modification of the retainer, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view showing the application of the improved comb.
The improved attachment forming the subject of the present invention can be very easily and cheaply manufactured, and may be applied to various kinds of combs.
' In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the comb is provided with two retainers arranged one on each side of the comb. Combs having only one row of teeth require of course only one retainer. These retainers may comprise as shown rectangular tubular framings 4 upon which are fixed or formed bentwalls 2 of sheet material which may have end walls to close the end openings.
According to the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the two retainers of a double comb are arranged on the same side of the comb, whereas according to the construction shown in Fig. 7 a double comb is provided with one retainer only and a guard made in one piece with the retainer is adapted to inclose and cover the inoperative row of teeth.
In Fig. 1 the comb 1 is shown as provided with two retainers 2 in which the combed out scurf or other particles collect.
The retainer or collector is arranged in such a manner that a free space or opening 7 remains between the teeth of the comb and the front portion of the retainer adjacent to the teeth.
The scurf, dandruff or other parts removed by the comb from the hair enter the retainer through this opening and collect in the retainer. The retainer is so shaped that the space inclosed is enlarged toward the middle of the comb. The front edge portion is covered at 3 with a soft yielding material such as felt, cloth, silk, velvet, plush or any other suitable stud. If preferred the whole retainer may bemade of such soft and yielding material.
In the construction shown the comb is inserted between the side members of the frame 4: carrying the retainers, and is held in position by clamp springs 6 on the end members which springs engage with recesses or notches 8 in the end edges of the comb. The comb may however be simply retained by hand in its proper relative position with regard to the retainer or it may as shown in Fig. 7 beretained by the guard'made in one piece with the retainer.
The comb may be used in the same man ner as an ordinary comb and is. preferably held slightly inclined in the direction of the stroke. As may be seen from .Fig. 8 the and presses down the hair.
edge portion of the retainer which is covered with, or consists of a yielding material slides during the combing operation upon the surface of the hair. The scurf or other impurities removed by the combing operation enter the retainer during the movement of the comb, the covering or cushion 3 which slides over the hair forming a tight closure which prevents the dropping of the impurities, It is to be observed'that the front portion of the retainer performs at the same time the function of an additional cleaner inasmuch as it removes impurities lying on the outer surface of the hair, and smooths The im urities removed by the front edge portion 0 the retainer also collect in the retainer or do so to a large extent.
The covering of the front edge portion of the retainer may be fixed to that portion either by gluing or in any other suitable manner. According to Fig. 3 the covering is held by inclined teeth 5 arranged on the inner surface of the retainer and can therefore be easily removed in order to be cleaned or exchanged.
Both the retainer and the comb may be easily cleaned after being separated from each other.
The retainers or attachments forming the subject of the invention may of course be made of any suitable material and in any desired size or shape within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. An attachment for scurf or other combs for retaining scurf or other impurities, said attachment comprising a curved retainer having its outer edge curved outwardly and backwardly upon itself so that the extreme edge is slightly spaced from the body of the retainer and forms a round edge slightly spaced from the comb; resilient means for holding the retainer on the comb; and a piece of soft material inclosed within said round edge and extending over said extreme edge and around said round edge.
2. An attachment for scurf or other combs for retaining'the scurf or other impurities, said attachment comprising a tubular frame forming plates adapted to receive the comb therebetween; a spring secured in said frame and adapted to press against the comb; retainers secured to said plates curved to form therewith a retaining space therebetween, the free edge of the retainers being curved and spaced from the teeth of the comb; end pieces for the retainer; and a piece of soft material secured on and around said free edge.
Dated this 1th day of November 1911.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signature in presence of two witnesses.
MIHAIL ALEXANDRESGU.
