CHARLES A. MCGANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COIVIB.

'To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MCCAN'N, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 223 West Twenty-third street, in the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combs particularly adapted for use with the hair, fur or hide of animals as dogs, and contemplates the provision of means for bringing a curative, antiseptic or insecticidal material into intimate contact with the hair, fur or hide while it is being combed at the same time providing a receptacle 'for combings and vermin.
My device also includes compact means adapted to receive interchangeably a series of combs of different inenes's.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on line II-II. of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar view with the packing material removed and the handles of the device forced together. Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional View on line IV-IV. of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View taken on line V.-V. of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the barrel-like case oi the device, provided with the end caps 2 and 3, which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner, such as by brazing. The barrel structure is not a complete cylinder, but is out away along the lines 4 and 5 to expose a portion of the interior for a distance of something less than one-half the periphery.
Within the barrel is a movable shield 6 mounted on pivots 7 and 8. This shield is concentric with the main barrel, and is provided at each end with a cap 9, between which and the caps 2 and 3 are positioned respectively the spiral springs 10 and 1.1. One end of each spring is secured to the corresponding cap of the shield, as shown at 12 in Fig. 5, while the central portion is atliXed at 13 to the hub or pivot about which the cap and shield are adapted to oscillate. A handle or iinger-piece 14 is securedto the shield by the rivets 15, or in any other suitable manner, and a ring or grip piece 16 is formed on the main barrel. The action of Specification of Letters Patent. Patnigd Aug,"a 18, 1914 Application filed June 8, 1912. Serial N o. 702,387.
the spiral springs is to cause the shield normally to close the gap in the barrel structure, and the finger or grip pieces may be used to retract the parts against the force of the springs for the purpose which will be more fully described.
A plurality of springclips 17 are brazed or otherwise suitably secured to the inner partV of the barrel near the line at along which it is cut away. rlhe purpose of these clips is to clamp in place a detachable combpiece 1S against the inturned flanges 19 and 20 of the caps on the barrel, as most clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. These iianges are out away, respectively, at 21 and 22, to facilitate the application to or removal from the barrel of a new comb-piece. It will therefore be obvious that any one of a series of comb-pieces having diEerent size teeth, or otherwise unlike, may be used with one holder.
Within the barrel may be placed a mass of absorbent material 23, such as absorbent cotton or a sponge preferably impregnated with a curative, antiseptic or inseoticidal solution. y
When the comb is used, it is gripped by the ring and finger-piece, whereby the shield is caused to assume the position shown in Fig. 3, and a portion of the absorbent material to be exposed through the slot or opening in the barrel, and to be brought into contact with the hair, fur or hide being treated. The combings and any vermin will be entrapped within the barrel and will be eX- terminated by the solution satura-ting the absorbent material.
It is obvious that I may omit the absorbent material, utilizing the interior of the barrel merely as a receptacle for colnbings.
While I have illustrated and described only one specific embodiment of my invention, I am aware that it is susceptible of modification, and I do not desire to be limited to the precise form shown.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a comb, a barrel having a longitudinal slot therein, a comb-piece mounted adjacent to said slot, a shield for closing said slot pivotally mounted within said barrel and substantially concentric therewith.
2. In a comb, a barrel having a longitudinal slot therein, a comb-piece mounted adjacent to said slot, a shield for `closing said slot pivotally mounted on said barrel and curved to the curvature of said barrelmounted adjacent to said slot, a shield for closing said slot pivotally mounted upon said barrel and substantially concentric therewith, and yieldable means for urging said shield to close said slot,
4. In a comb, a barrel having a longitudinal slot therein, a comb-piece having teeth curved to the curvature of said barrel detachably mounted adjacent to said slot, a shield for closing said slot pivotally mounted upon said barrel and substantially concentric therewith, and yieldable means for urging said shield to close said slot.
5.v In a comb, a barrel having a longitudinal slot therein a comb-piece having its teeth curved to the curvature of said barrel, means for detachably securing said combpiece to the barrel, a shield for closing said slot mounted upon said barrel and substantially concentrictherewith, yieldable means for urging said shield to close said slot, a handle on said shield, and a second handle on Said barrel.
