RUBBER STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,233,.dated January 15, 1889.
A Application filed August 29, 1887. Serial No. 248,217. (No model.)
To all whom t vaag con/cern.-
Be it knomi that I, EDwiN REYNOLDS, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rubber Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of rubof the rubber die with the inking-pad; and it consists in the combination of the dieholder and the pad-holder, a shank, to which the said die-holder and pad-holder are pivoted, and a ease sliding upon the shank and adapted to cause the opening or closing of the die and pad holders and to hold the same securely in their closed position, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l is a longitudinal section illustrating my improvement, showing the rubber die in position for use, the sliding case being in its backward position. Fig. 2 is a similar section, showing the sliding case in position for holding' the die and pad in contact with each other in a folded position. 3 represents a transverse section taken in the line @c of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a pencil, which is provided with a removable point-cap, B. vUpon the upper end of the body c of the pencil is placed the hollow shank C, to the upper end of which is pivoted the die-holder I), the side b of the hollow shank O being left open for the purpose of receiving the die-holder D and the pad-holder E when in their folded position, as shown in Fig. 2. To the side of the shank O, at a distance from its end, is pivoted the pad-holder E. The die-holder D is held in a transverse position for use, as shown in Fig. l, by means of the spring c, which is coiled around the pivot d, and the pad-holder E is also held in an outwardly-extended position by means of thespring c, which is coiled around the pivot f. The back gof the dieholder D strikes against the edge 'L' of the rear side, 71, of the shank, thus serving to limit the backwardv movement of the dieholder under the action of the spring c, and the backward movement of thev pad-holderE is limited by the edge j of the end of the holder, which strikes against the inner side of the back 7L of the shank.
Upon the cylindrical portion 7i: of the hollow shank O is placed the sliding case F, which is enlarged at its upper end, and is also cut away at the side Z, in order to make allowance for the required pivotal movement of the pad-holder E. The enlarged upper portion, F', of the sliding case F is provided longitudinally with a Iixed partition, on, thus forming a segmental chamber, n, within which is placed the pen-slide o, which is operated by means of the screw-stud p, passing through the slot q in the sliding case. Upon moving the sliding case F forward from the position shown in Fig. l the edge r of the partit-ion m will first strike against the back g of the die-holder, and thus cause the die-l1older to turn upon its pivot (l to moet the pad-holder E, which is also caused to turn upon its pivot f toward the die-holder by means of the shoulder .s of the sliding case, which strikes against the cylindricallyformed back portion 1f of the pad-holder E, and when the sliding case F has been carried to its extreme forward limit the rubber die G and the ink-pad II will be brought into close connection with each other, as shown in Fig. 2. The pad-holder E is preferably made with a cylindrically-shaped back, t, and in this case is provided. with a iixed partition, u,
-which serv Yis to form a supporting-back for the inking-pad H.
Upon moving the sliding case F back to contact with the annular stop w at the lower end of the shank O, the die G will be automatically turned to its position for use, as shown in Fig. l.
By means of my improved sliding case thel die and pad will be securely held for carrying in the pocket, and the required opening'y and elosin g movement of the die and pad can be made with great rapidity and convenienee.
I claim as my inventionl. In combination, the spring-operated dieholder pivoted to the shank, thespring-operated ink-pad holder, also pivoted to the shank, and the ease adapted byits sliding movement IOO and adapted to Cause the opening or closing of the die and pad,substantia,11y as described.
