TYPE-CASE ATTACHMENT.
rosenoa.
To all wh0mit may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHRIS WV. LUDTKE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Markesan, county of Green Lake, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Tmpro vements in Type-Case Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invent-ion is to provide a device for temporarily supporting a socalled space and quad case from a printers type case, whereby when a printer is setting up the type, the space and quad members which are set up with and interposed between the type, may be conveniently and quickly-reached by the type-setter, whereby the labor of setting type is reduced to the minimum.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top View of a type case of ordinary construction, showing two of the cases partially withdrawn from the cabinet and the space and quad case attached to the front upper edge of one of said type cases of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is an end View of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail in vertical section, showing the manner of supporting one corner of the space and quad case from one of the cases in the cabinet, and Fig. 4: is a front view, part in section, of a portion of the space and quad case resting upon the upper edge of one of the type cases of the cabinet.
Like parts are identified by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
1 represents the type cabinet or rack proper, which is provided with a plurality of cases 2 and 8. The upper edges of the cases 2 and 8 are provided with a vertical sockets 1, 4: for the reception of the vertical trunnions 5 of the space and quad case. The sockets 4 are formed in the front upper edges of the respective cases of the type cabinet or rack and are preferably reinforced by metallic tubular sleeves 6, which sleeves are formed integrally with the fastening plates 7, and the plates 7 are secured in place flush with the upper edge of the cases of the type cabinet by a plurality of screws 8, 8. By thus reinforcing the sockets, the liability of the walls of the cases becoming split, is reduced to the minimum. The trunnions 5 are formed integrally with the angular Specification of Letters Patent.

plates 9 and 10. The plate 9 is secured to the front edge of the space and quad case by a plurality of screws 11, while the plate 10 is secured to the under side of the space and quad case by a plurality of screws 12, 12, whereby said trunnions 5 are securely connected with the space and quad case.
It will be understood that when the space and quad case is not in use, it is readily removed from the cases by simply raising the case until the trunnions 5 are withdrawn from the sleeves 6. hen this is done, the cases 2 and 3 of the type cabinet or rack may be pushed back and inclosed in the cabinet or rack 1 in the ordinary manner. When desirous to use the space and quad case, it is simply necessary to partially withdraw the case which contains the type which it is desirous to use. "When this is done, the trunnions 5 of the space and quad case are readily inserted in the sleeves 6 of the case which has thus been partially withdrawn, and the type and quad case will be supported in a convenient position for removing its contents.
The several cases 2 and 3 of the type cabinet or rack are provided with the plurality of vertical partitions 14 of ordinary construction by which the several letters of type are kept separate from each other, and the space and quad case is also provided with a plurality of vertical partitions 15 by which it is subdivided into a plurality of compartments.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a type case provided with a plurality of vertical socket-s, a metallic sleeve located in each of said sockets, a fastening plate secured to each of said sockets, means for securing said fastening plates to the upper edge of said type case, a space and quad case, a plurality of vertical trunnions rigidly aflixed to the bottom of said space and quad case and adapted to support said space and quad case from the vertical sockets of said type cases.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a type case provided with a plurality of vertical sockets, a space and quad case, a plurality of vertical trunnions, an angular fastening plate secured to each of said trunnions, means for securing said fas- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature tening plates to the exterior surface of said in the presence of two Witnesses. space and quad case, said trunnions being CHRIS 7 LUDTKE TR adapted to support said space and quad case 5 from the upper edge of said type cases, all Witnesses:
