Description

N. PET ERSA PHDTD-LITMOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D (I `To all whom it mayconcern:4

lLetters .Patent No. 105,401,1dateel .'uly 12, 1870.
nvxRovEMnNT' :N PUMPS.
Schedule referred to in these Letters Pa'tent and making part of the same.
4Be it known that I, HENRY M.' `WYETFI, of New ark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
` and exact description of the same, reference being Ahad h to the accompanying drawing making apart'ofthis 1 specicat-ion, in whicb-A t Figure 1 is a sectional, and
Figure 2, a side elevation. l
This invention consistsinthe combination, with an ordinary double-acting atmospheric pumpp'rovided `with a cap tightly packed, through which the pumpi rods work in standing-boxes, of' a pipe passing vertically through the cap, and thus `communicating with the interior of the pump, by which arrangement, when the spout through whichthe water raised by the atmos-` pherie pump Hows is closed, the apparatus is converted into a force-pump, so that I have a dQu'ble-acting atmospheriolpump and a double-actingforce-pump combned `in a single cylinder and working with a single a -lever.
In the drawingu A is the pump-cylinder; y a a, `upper and lower` boxes y b b, rods connected at the lower ends with the boxes a, and passing upward `through stuffing-boxes in the d, the lever by which the boxes are worked;
e e, rods connecting the lever d with the Vrods b, the object of this`.arrangement being t5 permit the main rods to work vertically in theirstuing-boxes without lateral pressure; y -v f j, the standards springing from the top of the pump and supporting the pivot of the lever d.
i, th'e packing'between the top of the pump and the cap c; i
V h, the spout through which flows the water raised bythe atmospheric pump, and
It, the pipe which passes through the cap c, and conveys away the water discharged by the force-pump.
As long as the spout h remains open, the apparatus works simply as an atmospheric pump. To convert it into a force-pump, the spout h is closed by the insertionof a plug, l, when water brought up by the boxes, linding n'oother outlet, rushes through the pipe k, and may be used for putting ont tires, watering gardens, or for any other purpose to which it is adapted. Having thus described my invention, lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s Y
