Description

JOHN ROGERS, OF DOWAGIAO, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 105,255, dated July 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNINGj-SHEARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, J oHN G. ROGERS, of Dowagiao, in the county of Oass and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Pruning-Shears, of which' the following is a specification.
The nature otvmy invention relatesto that class of pruning-shears havingr a saw combined; and
The improvement consists in a more convenient and simple arrangement of the several parts.
The accompanying drawing shows a longitudinal view through the diameter of the handle A. This handle must be suieiently long to reach the limbs to be pruned.
In oneend of this handle the shank of the shearblade B is permanently fixed.
The other shear-blade, O, is provided with the slot D, which allows of a longitudinal movement of this blade as the shears are opened and shut.
The shank of blade C is curved, as seen at E, and
impinges on the shoulder, F, on the shank of blade B .To the curved shank E is attached one end of the oonnection-rod G.
The other end of ,this rod is pivoted to the short lever H. Y
The stationary end of lever H is pivoted to the handle A.
It will now be seen that any movement of the short lever H will cause, through the action of the slot D, pin L, and'shoulder F, a combined lateral and Vlongitudinal movement of the blade O, being a movement most desirable in pruning-shears. l
To the lower end of handle A is pivoted the saw J, having the spring K, which acts on the saw similar to the action ofthe spring of a pocket-knife on its blade, holding the saw in position, whether extended for operation or folded into the handle, where it is entirely out of the way when using the shears.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What L claim is- 'lhe shears, consisting of the blade G, with curvedY shank E, slot D, rod G, and lever H, and the lblade B, shank, with pin L, shoulder F, and handle A, with saw J and spring K, constructed and arranged as described.
