WILLIAM R. GARDNER., or LEONARDSVII@ NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 105,191, (lated July l2, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT -IN' PESSARIES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. GARDNER, Aof Leonardsville, in the county of MadSQlJ and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing Pessaries; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a pessary, having at its upper end a hinged curved lip attached to a stationary curved lip of similar form and construction, in such manner as t0 admit of the hinged oradjustable lip being compressed into small colnpass for insertion, -the lower endy of said pessary beingof To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its. construction.
A, Figure 1, is a top view ofthe pessary, showing the form of the lever portion of the same; also, the top or outside of the adjustable lip B, as it appears when closed.
B, Figure 2, is a transverse side view of the pessary.
`B represents the hinged or curved lip, open, as when 1n use.
c, one of the pins or rivets upon which it turns when being compressed or relaxed.
D D are dotted lines, showing the position of the adjustable lip B when closed for insertion, said li'p being composed of hard or vulcanized rubber.`
C, Figure 3, is a top view of the stationary portion -uterus. Y .I What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letof the pessary, showing the form of the lever when the adjustable lip is removed.
D, Figure 4, is a perspective view ofthe entircvpessary, showing its general shape and position, with the curved lip open to its full capacity.
It is evident, frpm theconstructionfof this form of pessary, that it is readily passed through the vulva, and,- by a proper movement of the index-finger, is opened and adjusted to the postem'or and anterior snrfaces of the lips and neck ot" the uterus, firmly securing it in position by resting against the inner surface of the pubic bone.
The principal advantages of this pessary over any form heretofore constructed are, that, by its adjustable curved lip, combined with the stationary curved lip o'f similar form, it a'ords a complete and perfect support for the uterus, thus enabling me to ei'ect-ually control the most diilicult cases of antiversion, and antitlec# tion, retroversion, retroiection, and prolapsus of the ters Patent, is
Attaching the adjustable curved lip B to a stationary curved lip of l similar forni and construction, when combined and arranged in the manner and for the pur; pose substantially as herein described and set forth.
WILLIAM R. GARDNER.
