PATENT OEEicE,
DE OALVUS SMITH, OF OOLEBROOK, OHIO.
FELT-BOOT HEEL-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,226, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed April 18,1904. Serial No. 203,637.
Be it known that i, be CALVUS SMITH, aciti- Zen of the United States, residing at Colel)l()()l(, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Felt-Boot Heel-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in felt-boot heelplates, and refers to a plate or protector adapted solely and entirely for use in connection with a felt boot.
The object of my invention is the provision of a heel-plate protector which can be applied with ease to the heel of the felt boot in general use, said plate or protector acting as a stiffening for the boot, insuring longer life to the boot, preventing collapsing of the heel of the boot, and permitting the easy withdrawal or removal of the boot.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a plate or protector adapted to be applied to the exterior of the heel portion of the boot, said plate or protector being of the simplest and cheapest possible construction and capable of performing its several func tions in a practical and eflicient manner.
\Yith these objects in view my invention consists of a heel plate or protector for felt boots embodying novel featuresof construction and adaptation of parts for service, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a complete felt boot provided or equipped with my heel protector or plate. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the complete plate or protector detached. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the plate or protector detached. Fig. i represents a plan view of the plate or stiffener proper.
in the drawings the letter A designates a felt boot of the common and well-known construction, in connection with which I employ my plate or protector, said plate or protector consisting of the concaved metal stiffener or plate B, formed with the openings O for receiving the threads or 'fastenings l), which secure the fabric extension E, to which is secured the reinforcing braid or strip F, this with the plate litting closely and snugly upon the heel portion of the exterior of the felt boot and being secured thereto by suitable fastenings Or and in this manner forming a stiffener for the heel portion, also sustaining or keeping the shape of the boot and causing it to lit properly at the heel and also enabling the boot to be easily removed by the hand or by the insertion in a bootjaclc, the braid forming, with the plate, the shoulder or grasping portion H, which permits the easy and ready removal of the boot.
it will thus be seen that I provide a device which can be sold separately from the boot and attached thereto by any person, or the boot may be equipped with the improvement at the factory, and it will be apparent that the device is of such simple and inexpensive construction and will prove so useful and dcsirable that it will fill a long-felt want in a thorough manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the heel portion of a felt boot, a plate shaped to conform to the shape of the boot and provided with a series of openings around its edge, a flexible extension connected to said plate and secured thereto by fastenings passing through the openings of the plate, said extension fitting snugly against the heel of the boot and a strip or reinforcing-band around the edge of the extension and secured thereto and adapted to be secured to the boot-heel.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DE OALVUS SMITH.
