FILM-DRYING RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 19, 1912. Serial No. 715,853.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RALPH E. RORABECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lavina, in the county of Musselshell and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film-Drying Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in racks for drying films, and an object thereof is the provision of a rack in which a plurality of films of different sizes may be supported at the same time.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rack in which clamps are vertically adjustable thereon whereby films of different lengths may be secured in the rack.
WVith these and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel constructions and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved rack comprising side bars 2, an upper bar 3 and lower bar 4, which are connected to the side bars. Extending downwardly from the ends and the intermediate portion of the frame are rigidly connected legs 5 and pivotally mounted on a rod 6,
which is connected to the lower bar 4 of the frame, are legs 7 which are adaptedto be folded against the legs 5 when the frame is not in use. Pins 8 are secured to the frame above the pivoted legs 7 to provide stops therefor to limit the upward movement of the legs. Disposed between the end bars 2 are parallel bars 9, which are connected at the upper and lower ends to the upper and lower bars of the frame. These bars are provided on their opposite faces with point near the lowerbar 4 of the frame. Shdably mounted in the grooves between the parallel bars 9 are clam members 11, which are formed in two sections 12'and 13. The lower section 12 of the clamping members are relatively longer than the up or section 13 thereof and are adapted toslide in the longitudinal grooves 10 ofthe bars 9, while the upper sections 13 of the-clamp members are adapted to fitflush between the bars, thereby allowing the clamping members to be easil separated. The members 12 and 13 of t e clamp-s are connected at their upper edges by hinges l4 and the upper members 13 are provided with a longitudinal series of pins 15 which are adapted to enter recesses 16 in the lower bar to provide positive means for holding the film within the clamps. Mounted on the rear edge of the lower section l2 is a U-shaped spring member 12 which is ada ted to bear against the upper member 13 o the clamp,
thereby normally holding the sections 111 17, the upper ends of which are curved to form handles 18, and the lower ends of the levers are adapted to extend below the clamps 11 and have secured on their outer edges buffers 19, which are adapted to engage the parallel bars 9. The buffers are normally held in engagement with the parallel bars by means of an expansion spring 20 which is disposed between the handles 18 of the levers.
To facilitate insertion of the clamp members 11 in the grooves 10 of the parallel bars, notches 21 are formed in the upper face of the bars 9 near the lower ends thereof and extend to the grooves 10, whereby the clamps 11 may be readily applied to or removed from the frame when desired. On the lower bar-4 of the frame between the parallel bars'9, are clamping bars 22 which are hingedly connected as at 23, to the bar'4.--
The bars 22 are provided at their upper edges with a longitudinal series of teeth 24 which are adapted to engage a series of recesses 25 in the bar 4 whereby the lower edge of-.the film may-besecurelyheld in the Patented Jan. 28, 1913.

The operation of'my rack is as follows: In the practical use of my device, the upper section 13 of the clamp 11 may be raised and the upper edge of the film inserted between the members, whereupon the member 13 may be allowed to close and the film will be securely held in the clamp 11 by pins 15,
which pierce the film and engage the recesses 16 of the lower section 12 of the clamps. The buffers 19 may then be disengaged from the parallel bars 9 of the frame by movement of the handles 18 of the crossed levers, whereupon the clamps 11 may be moved downwardly upon the frame so the lower edge of the film, may be secured by the clamps 22 to the lower bar 4- of the frame. The film will be securely held to the lower bar 4 by means of pins in the bar 22 engaging with the recesses in the bar 4 and extending through the film. When the film is securely held at its upper and lower ends in the above manner, the clamps 11 are then moved upwardly in the frame until the film is extended to its full length, whereupon the handles 18 of the cross levers may be released and the buffers 19 engaged with the side bars 9 whereby the clamps 11 are held in adjusted position in the frame.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that 'I have provided a film drying rack which is simple in construction, which may be easily operated and which is suitable for the reception of a plurality of films of different sizes.
While the accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, minor changes in the construction of the parts thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
What I claim is:
1. In a rack for drying films, a frame, clamps slidably mounted in said frame, said clamps being formed in two sections and hingedly secured together, means for securing one end of the film between the sections, and means for holding said sections in closed position.
2. In a device of the character described, comprising a frame, clamps slidably adjustable in said frame, said clamps being formed in two sections hingedly secured together, one of said sections being provided with a series of pins and the other section with a series of recesses for the reception of said pins, and means for holding said sections in closed position.
3. In a device of the character described, comprising a frame having spaced parallel .bars secured therein, said bars having centrallydisposed longitudinal grooves, clamps 'a frame having spaced parallel bars, said bars being provided with longitudinal grooves, clamps slidably mounted in the grooves in said bars, the said bars comprising two sections hingedly secured together, pins carried by one of said sections and adapted to engage recesses in the other of said sections, means for holding said sections in closed position, and means for holding said clamps in adjusted position in said frame.
5. In a rack for drying films, comprising a frame, spaced paralle'l bars secured in said frame,-the said bars being provided with longitudinal grooves therein, clamps slidably mounted in said grooves, the said clamps being formed in two sections hingedly secured together, means for securing one end of the film between the sections, and means for holding said sections in closed position.

7. In a rack for drying films, comprising a frame, clamps secured to the lower end of said frame, parallel bars having longitudinal grooves therein secured in said frame, clamps slidably mounted in said grooves, the said second clamps comprising sections hingedly secured together, crossed levers pivotally secured to the said second mentioned clamps, bufl'ers secured on one end of said levers, the said buflers adapted to engage the said parallel bars for holding the said slidable clamps in adjusted position.
8. In a rack for drying films, comprising a frame, clamps slidably mounted in said frame, said clamps comprising sections hingedly secured together, means for securing one end of the film between the sections, a spring for holding said sections in closed position, one end of said spring being secured to one edge of one of the sections and bearing against the face of the other of said sections, and means for holding said sections in. adjusted position.
