[NVEN TOR Attorney 3 WILLIAM H. BERG, OF ROUND MOUNTAIN, NEVADA.
SELF-ADJUSTING HAMMOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an.'21, 1913.
Application filed December 27, 1911. Serial No. 668,074.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BERG,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Round Mountain, in the county of Nye and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Adjusting Hammocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in self-adjusting hammocks.
The object of my invention is to provide a hammock and means to equalize the strain upon the supporting rope of the hammock.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter clearly made apparent in the specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form which my invention may take.
In said drawings, Figure l is a plan view, showing a hammock constructed in accordance with my invention, and, Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing one of the supporting hooks for the hammock and the adjacent sections of the supporting rope.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is a hammock, which is preferably constructed in a rectangular form. One end of the body portion 1 may be provided with a pillow 2, if desired. Rings or loops 3 are secured to the four corners of the body of the hammock and serve as anchoring means for the ends of the supporting ropes.
In order that my hammock may be sup ported, I provide a pair of rigid loops 4:, which are preferably substantially triangular in form and adapted to be engaged with a hook (not shown). The loops 4 are provided on one side with a plurality of members 5, which will hereinafter be known as crossed-curved rope guides, and which are pivotally connected to said loops. The crossed-curved rope guides 5 are preferably formed from sheet metal, substantially U- shaped in cross section and with the sides of the loop portion curved so that the bases of said members are semicircular, thus providing a curved path for a rope when passed through said members. A plurality of the members 5 are secured to the ends of the body of the hammock between the loops 3. A rope 6 has one end secured to one of the rings 3 and is then threaded alternately through the members 5 upon the loops and on the end of the hammock until the ring at the opposite side of said hammock is reached, when the free end of the rope is secured thereto.
With this construction it will be seen that when a weight is positioned upon a hammock, such as a person sitting therein, the straln upon the rope 6 will be equally distributed upon the sections thereof, as should the weight be positioned nearer one side than the other, the ropes will slip smoothly and easily through the members 5 to compensate for the unequal distribution of weight.
With a hammock of the usual construction a misplacing of the body in the hammock will cause an excessive strain to be borne by the ropes on the side near which the weight is positioned and a lesser strain by the ropes on the other side thereof. Such use of a hammock quickly results in breaking the supporting ropes. With my construction the ropes will slide through the members 5 until positioned to equalize the strain upon the sections of the rope.
What I claim as new is:
A hammock comprising a body portion, a rigid supporting loop for each end of said body portion, anchoring loops secured to each corner of said hammock, a plurality of guiding members pivotally secured to the ends of said hammock between said anchoring loops, a plurality of similar guiding members pivotally secured to each of said supporting loops, and a rope having its ends secured to said anchoring loops and extending back and forth through said first and second mentioned guiding members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. BERG.
WVitnesses:
