UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND W. HOFELE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CLEATS AND HAWSER-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,628, dated November 30, 1875; application filed July 31, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND W. HoFELE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Gleat and Clamp, of which the following is a specification:
The present invention relates to a combined cleat and clamp, adapted for use on vessels, &c.
In docking a vessel it frequentlyhappens that the full length of hawser is let run out because a sufficient hold cannot be had as it nears its end; and to obviate this difficulty I have so constructed a cleat, having a clamp set within it, by which the end of the hawser may be griped and held secure until released by the person in charge, the construction and operation of which will be understood from the followin g description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the line a w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
in the case here presented the letter A represents a metallic cleat, cast hollow, or in such manner as to receive the clamps or segments B B. The said clamps or segments, being pivoted at O O, and having springs D D hearing against their outer ends, as shown in Fig. 2, will have a continuous tendency to gripe the rope or hawser E until the person in charge dinary cleat; but in case a vessel, in coming up to her dock, should appear to be running out her full length of hawser, with danger of slipping it altogether, then the end of the hawser may be'slippcd through the cleat and passed between the clamps, which will gripe and hold it secure, thereby saving much time and annoyance in docking vessels.
I do not limit mysel exclusively to the use of the above-described invention as applied to vessels, as it may be used to advantage in other Ways, such as a hold for window-shades, 823C.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- I ent- A metallic cleat having clamps or segments B B pivoted therein, and acting upon a hawser rope or cord, in the manner and for the purposes substantially as herein set forth, shown, and described.
FERDIFAND WM. HOFELE.
