IMPROVEMENT IN SLINGS FOR PACKAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,765, dated October 10, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HoHoEsT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sling for Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a perspective view of my sling when partially filled with packages. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same when empty.

This invention relates to a sling made of rope netting, provided at its corners with eyelets through which pass protecting side ropes which are fastened to the netting at its ends and sides, in combination with supporting straps or handles the ends of which are provided with eyelets or grommets sliding on the protecting side ropes in such a manner that when the sling is loaded with a quantity of small packages and suspended from its supporting straps the protecting side ropes adjust themselves so as to prevent the packages from dropping out at the sides of the sling, and a sling is produced which lcan be used with great advantage, particularly for loading and unloading vessels, and also stores.

In the drawing, the. letter A designates a netting made of ropes or thick cords in an. oblong or rectangular form. To each of the four corners of this rope netting is secured an eyelet or groinmet, a., and through these grommets pass the protecting side ropes I), which are fastened at their ends to the ends of the netting near the said grommets, and in the middle to the sides of the netting, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

Between the ends of the'protecting sideropes and the adjoining grommets c are placed eyelets or grommets c which slide on the side ropes, and

to which are secured the supporting straps or handles d.

By these means a sling is produced which adapts itself readily to the quantity of packages placed in the same, for, if said sling is loaded with a number of packages and suspended from its supporting-straps d, the edges of the netting, and particularly the protecting side ropes b, adjust themselves, as shown in Fig. 1, and the packages are prevented from droppin g out at the sides of the sling. v A

If my sling is to be used for very small packages which would be liable to pass through the meshes of the netting, I cover said netting with a piece of sail-cloth or other textile fabric, which may be fastened to the netting` in any desirable manner.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A sling for packages, composed of a netting, A, provided with eyelets c and side ropes b, said side ropes being made to pass through the eyelets a, and also through eyelets c at the ends of the supporting-straps d, substantially in the manner herein shown and descibed.

- 2. The combination of side ropes b with a netting, A, and its corner eyelets a, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of self-adjusting straps el with the side ropes b, corner eyelets a, and netting A, substantially as described.
