To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK A. WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in inkstands, and its object is to provide a convenient and comparatively inexpensive stand comprising a base containing an inkwell having a forwardly projecting portion and at its sides circular or arc-shaped guides, and a rotary disk removable cover having a projecting lip at one side to conceal or expose said forward portion of the well according as the cover is moved to carry said lip over or from over the same.

A distinguishing feature of my invention is that means are provided for arresting the cover when the same is moved either to the right or left to carry the lip thereof from over the forward portion of the well, so that said lip shall not when the inkstand is in use project beyond the glass base.

The invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed and will be understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an inkstand embodying my invention, the cover being shown in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on the dottedline 2-2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the dotted line 33 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a top view of the base, the cover being omitted, and Fig. 5 is a detached bottom view of the cover.

In the drawings 10 designates the base and 11 the rotary cover. The base 10 is preferably an integral block of glass containing an ink-well 12 having a forwardly extending reduced portion 13. The base 10 is formed on opposite sides of the upper.

edge of the main body of the well 12 with arc-flanges 14 which extend upwardly from the main top surface of said base. The front ends of the flanges 14 terminate at the sides of the reduced portion 13 of the well, and the rear ends of said flanges end at opposite sides of the center of the rear portion of the well 12 and form stops for the cover, as hereinafter explained. The cover 11 is preferably of pressed or molded composition material and is in the form of a disk having a depending encompassing flange 15 and a forwardly projecting lip 16, which preferably will have a recess 17 in its upper surface and is formed with a trans versely elongated downwardly extending projection 18 on its lower surface. The cover is also formed at the inner side of its rear edge with a shoulder 19.

The cover 11 is placed loosely over the well 12 and the flange 15 of the cover embraces the guide-flanges 14 on the base and the shoulder 19 lies between the rear ends of the flanges 14. The lip 16 when the cover is applied to the base, may be placed directly over the reduced portion 13 of the well or on the base at either side of said portion and then brought over the same by giving the cover the required rotary motion. When the lip 16 is over the portion 13 of the well, its projection 18 enters said portion and extends nearly the distance between the side walls of the same and serves as a yielding locking means for holding the cover stationary in its closed position. Then the cover is turned in either direction from its closed position, suflicient force will be applied to the same to cause the projection 18, whose ends are beveled, to ride up out of the well and pass upon the flat top surface of the base. When the cover 11 is turned in either direction to carry the lip from over the portion 13 of the well, so as to expose said portion to receive the pen, the cover will be arrested at the extreme of its movement and before the lip could reach a position where it might project laterally beyond the base, by the engagement of the shoulder 19 with the rear end of one of the flanges 14. WVhen the cover is turned to the right its shoulder 19 will engage the left hand flange 14 as a stop, and when the cover is turned to the left its shoulder 19 will engage the right hand flange 14 as a stop. 16 so that the user may rotate the cover 11 to open or close the well with the use of his pen, the point of the pen being inserted in said recess and used to move the cover.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
