UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT MACKIE SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DES K-TO P.
srEerEreAtrroN forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,172, daten es, 190i.
Appli'eatin flled February 21, 1901. Serial No. 48,287. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ROBERT' MACKIE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Desk-Top, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for transforming the ordinary school-desk into a desk fitted both for academic work and also for manual training and analogous employment. This end I attain by certain ,specially-arranged devices enabling me to t the desk with a Yreversible top, one side of w-hich is arranged for academic work and the other side of which is arranged for manual work, and upon the jmere reversal of the top the desk may be transformed from one style into the other.
This specification is a specific description of one formof the invention, while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.-
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part or this specication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sideview of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
a indicates the top of an ordinary schooldesk to which my invention is adapted to be applied. Z2 indicates the side framing thereof, and c indicates the front portion of the desk, which forms also the back of the seat of the desk immediately in front of it.
d indicates the reversible top, which is tit. ted to the desk and which in general is of the I same form as the top ct, the top el being providedat one side with a depression d', forming a tray for the tools used in manual training and on the other side with a groove d2, forming the usual pencil and pen receptacle. One end of the top d is provided at each side with screws e, the heads of which form trunnions which fit in grooves f', formed in the inner side walls of slideways f, secured to the side edges of the top a of the desk. These slideways are fastened to the part c of the desk by screws f2 and to the parta by downwardly and inwardly turned lugs f3, which lie against the top a and are held thereon by .screws f4, as shown.
The grooves f in the slideways f have enlarged and downwardly-turned end portions, asV indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and full lines in Fig. 3. These enlarged ends are adapted to receive and to hold the trunnions e when the top d is at rest. When the top lies with its trunnions e at the front end of the desk, the trunnions will rest in the enlargements at the front ends of the grooves f', and when the top is in this adjustment the tray d will be uppermost and the desk will then be arranged for manual training. The top is held firmly in place by the engagement of the trunnions in the enlarged ends of the grooves f. To reverse the desk, the rear end of the top is raised and the top is thrown over, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the trunnions e being moved along the slideways to the lower or rear ends thereof and dropped into the enlargement at said ends, thus reversing the position of the top and placing the pencil-groove cl2 uppermost, so as'to adapt the desk for mental work. An ink-well g is arranged for the desk and is pivoted on the under side of the top ct, so that it may swing in and out of position as desired and so that it will not be interfered with by the repeated adjustments of the top d.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination with a desk, of a slideway/'arranged thereon and provided with a groove the ends of which are enlarged and projected transversely, and a reversible top having-a part running in said groove and adapted to it in the transversely-projected ends thereof.
2. The combination with a desk, of a slideway carried thereon and provided with a pax groove, the ends of which are enlarged and iarged and turned downward, and a reversiturned transversely, and a reversible tophavbie top having tru nnions at one end portion, ing a trunnion at one end portion, such trunsuch trunnions fitting slidablyin said grooves. nion running in the groove of the siideway. In testimony whereof I have signed my 5 3. The combination with a desk, of slidenaine to this specification in the presence of ways arranged at the side edges of the top of two subscribing witnesses.
