SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,693, dated March 1, 1904. Application filed June 13,1903. Serial No. 161,744. on model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LERoY W. FRENCH and CHARLEs E. DECKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Holton, in the county of .Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pad- Holders, of which the following is a specifica- The present invention'while relating particularly to means for holding blocks or pads of money-order blanks may be employed for many analogous purposes, as will be readily seen whenthe nature of the lnvention is understood.
Theobject in view is to provide a holder "that will always present the uppermost sheet of a pad or block of paper or blanks to be written upon in the most convenient position with respect to the hand of the writer and without regard to the thickness of said pad.
Another and further object is to provide means for securely holding the sheetwhilethe same is being written upon, said sheet being readily released and removed from the holder when desired.
"While, the invention is open to various changes and modifications, the preferred form T ofconstruction is illustrated in the accompa-l nying drawings and is described in the following specification.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder complete. Fig. 21s a longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig.4 is a detail perspective view of the pad-holding plate.

' In the construction illustrated a base-plate 1 isemployed, having at one end and on its upper surface a base-block 2 extending across the same, this block being secured in place by any suitable means. The upper face of the block is provided with grooves 3, that are of greater depth at their inner than at their outer ends. The ends of said block carry strips 1,
intermediate portions of which are doubled and project beyond said ends to form guideflanges 5, that are located longitudinally of The plate 6 is provided at its opposite 1015- 1 gitudinal edges with upstanding fingers 10 and 11, these fingers being formed by the upturned terminals of strips 12, arranged upon theunder side of the plate 6, said strips fitting in the grooves 3 ofthe base-block. The fingers 10 are preferably somewhat longer than the fingers ll, and-the strips are secured solely to the plate 6'at points contiguous to the lower ends of said fingers 10. As a result the fingers 11 can be depressed, as indicated in Fig.2, the depth of the slots 3 permitting this depression. -Suitable means are also employed for moving the pad-holder, this means being in the form of a rock-shaft 13, jou'rnaled between the base-plate and block, the said rock-shaft having its ends upturned to form arms 14:, that engage in slots 15, constructed in the down turned end flanges8'. Oneof the arms is prolonged to constitute an actuating-lever 16, that is thus located at one end of the pad-holding means and contiguous to a guard 17, secured to said plate, said guard also constituting a handhold when. the lever and the pad-holding means are moved.

A removable platen 19 is arranged to be fitted Within the pad and has a positioningflange 20 at one edge. This platen constitutes a firm support forthe leaves to be written upon, the usual carbon copy 20 being interposed between said leaves. The pad is constructed to fit between the fingers l0 and 11 and abut against the guard 17 In connection with the pad supporting and holding means above described there is employed a rest consisting of a platform 21,
hinged, as shown at 22, to the end of the baseplate Opposite said padholding means. The free end of this platform carries a hand-rest 23, having ends that project beyond the side edges of the platform. The free edge 25 of this hand-rest being beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, is constructed to rest upon the lower edge of the upper sheet of the pad 18. This free margin is provided in rear of its edge with a depending flange 26, which is so related that it will be located against the lower edge of the pad and constitute means for securely positioniong the same.
In the use of this device the rest is first slightly elevated, the pad is placed in the holder with the platen and carbon in proper position under the upper leaves thereof, and said'holder is moved by means of the lever so that the lower edge of the pad will be in the path of movement of the hand-rest. Said rest is then permitted to assume a position upon the upper sheet. As a result said sheet will be in a very convenient position with respect to the hand of the writer placed upon the rest. The projecting ends of said rest afiord a support for the hand of the writer on theextreme ends of the sheet. After the blank has been properly filled out the lever is moved rearwardly, thereby carrying the holder and pad in a corresponding direction. This will move the lower edge of the pad from beneath the rest, and said rest will drop, leaving the blank free to be torn from the block and at the same time release both the platen and carbon, so that they may be readily reinserted beneath the succeeding leaves. As the pad diminishes in thickness the rest will be correspondingly depressed, but will always be in proper relation to the uppermost sheet. In time said rest will bear upon the lower fingers 11; but as said fingers move downwardly they will not interfere with the operation of the structure. It will thus be apparent that the objects mentioned in the preliminary portion of the specification are accomplished by this structure. As the hand is elevated to a comfortable writing position the paper is held firmly and at the same time may be readily released.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a pad-support, of a combined rest and leaf-holder associated with the support.
2. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a pad-support, of a rest having a portion movable with respect to the support and arranged to bear upon a pad placed thereon.
3. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of pad-supporting means mounted thereon, and a rest hinged to the base and constructed to bear upon a pad placed on the supporting means.
4. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of padsupporting means. mounted on one end thereof, and a rest hinged to the opposite end of the base and having its free end constructed to bear upon a pad placed on the support.
5. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of pad -supporting means located at one end of the base and .in eluding upstanding retaining fingers, a platform hinged to the opposite end of the base and having a hand-rest at its free end that is adapted to rest upon a pad placed within the fingers.
'6. In apad-holder of the class described, the combination with a hand rest, of a pad support movable toward and from thehand-rest.
7 In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a movable hand-rest, of a pad-support movable toward and from the hand-rest.
8. In apad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of a swinging rest hinged to the base, and a pad-support slidably mounted on the base.
9. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of a pad-holder slidably mounted upon the base, and a rest movably mounted upon the base and arranged to bear upon a pad placed in the holder when said holder is in a predetermined position.
10. In apad-holder of the class deseribed,the combination with a base, of a rest hinged to the base, and a pad-support movably mounted on the base and movable into and out of the path of movement of the rest.
11. In apad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base-plate, ofapad-holder slidably mounted upon one end of the baseplate and movable longitudinally thereof, and a swinging rest hinged to the other end of the base and having its free end adapted to rest upon a pad placed on the support.
12. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of a pad-holder slidable longitudinally of the base, and means for moving the holder.
13. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of a pad-holder slidable upon the base, and a rock shaft having offset arms that engage the holder to move the same.
14. In apad-holder of the class described, the combination with a base, of apad-holder slidable upon the base, and a rock shaft having oflset arms that engage the holder to move the same, one of said arms being extended to for an actuating-lever.
15. In a pad-holder of the class described, the combination with pad supporting means, of upstanding retaining-fingers mounted thereon,certain of the fingers being depressible, and a hand-rest arranged over the depressible fingers.
16. In a pad-holder of the class described, the
other end of the base-plate and having a handrest plate at its free end that is adapted to rest upon a pad placed in the holder.
