COMBINED TABLE AND MEP-RACK.
Speccation of `Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1913.
Application led February 9, 1912. Serial No. 676,499.
To @ZZ whom t may concern l Be it known that I, KARL W. SCHWARZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Combined Table and Map-Rack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved table and map rack, and has for an object the provision of an improved structure v whereby the maps are normally housed in a rotatable member adapted to be withdrawn therefrom and spread automatically during the withdrawing on a support-ing table.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rotating cylindrical member carrying a plurality of retractile rollers on which is adapted to be wound maps, and the like, the rotatable housing being associated with a table formed with a slot through which the maps may be moved in order to.
spread the maps on the table, one end of the maps being held by the roller, the other end projecting on the upper side of the table.
In carrying out these objects a table of the usual structure is provided, having supporting legs and an upper continuous surface. Arranged in the upper surface is a pivotally mounted door which when hinged back uncovers a slot through which maps and the like may be moved, the maps eX- tending through a rotating cylindrical housing and engaging on winding rollers pivotally mounted in the cylinder. rlhe cylinder is adapted to hold any desired number of rollers for accommodating any desired number of maps, and is arranged to be rotated by suitable means at the end whereby any particular map may be brought opposite the opening in the table in order to be pulled upward and over the table for displaying the map.
A practical embodiment ofthe invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention looking from the front, certain parts being broken away to better disclose the construction; Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 approximately on the line 2 2.; Fig. 3 is an enlarged `fragmentary end view vof part of a map carrying cylinder and map holding members; Fig. 4 is a detailed fragmentary perspective view showing part of the map holding cylinder and disclosing stops for limiting the movement of the map when rewound; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detailed sectional. view of one end of the rollers; and Fig. v(i -is an end view of the roller shownvin Fig. 5.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the top of a table and 2 vthe supporting legs. The table 1 is provided with a door 3 which normally closes an opening 4 in the top of the table. Connected with the table 1 is a housing 5 in which is mounted a rotatable cylinder 6. The cylinder 6 is provided with end members 7 and 8, and a plurality of connecting bars or slats 9. Connected to one of the end members 8 is a shaft 10 which extends to the exterior of the housing 5 and which carries an operating crank 11 whereby the cylinder 6 may be freely rotated.
Arranged within the cylinder 6 are a plurality of rollers 12 which are preferably made on the order of ordinary window shade rollers which when given a slight quick pull, and then released, will automatically rewind or will stay substantially in any adjusted position when held temporarily in that position. Connected to each of the rollers 12 is a map 13, which in turn has connected to the outer edge or end thereof a retaining bar 14. It will be understood that in this specification the word map means an ordinary map, a chart, plan, picture, or other representation which may be placed on a sheet of ieXible material. -The map 13 is designed to normally remain in the cylinder 6 but may be easily removed therefrom for being displayed on the table l when the bar 14 is moved upward through the slot or opening 4 and then moved over to substantially the position shown in Fig. 2. By reason of the particular construction of the roller 12, the map 13 will remain in any adjusted position and also any desired amount of map may be removed and displayed. Also it will be evident that the map may be quickly and easily caused to rewind and thus be conveniently stored for future reference. Also by the construction and arrangement described `and shown, various maps may be displayed and examined quickly and when the examination has been completed, the maps will be properly stored in their proper places protected by the cylinder 6 and the housing 5. In order to prevent the map 13 from going entirely into the cylinder 6, or rather to prevent the end from going into the cylinder 6, the bars 14 are caused to engage retaining or limiting stops 15 screwed or otherwise rigidly secured to the slats 9, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The stops 15 may be positioned any desired distance apart and may be shifted Whenever' desired for accommodating -maps of any Width of material.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a device of the character described, a table formed with an aperture therein, a rotatable cylinder arranged beneath said aperture, saidcylinder being formed with a plurality of slots therein, a stop arranged near the ends of each of said slots, a roller arranged in said cylinder opposite each of said slots, a map secured at one end rigidly to said roller and adapted to be coiled or Wrapped thereon, and a bar secured to the opposite end of each of said maps, said bar normally fitting against said stops in said slots, said bar being adapted to be moved manually through the aperture in said table, thence over part of the table for spreading said maps over the table` In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
KARL WM. SCHWARZ.
