SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,537, dated September 6, 1887.

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LoYn, of Loveland, in the county of Larinier and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Ribbon-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates toa device for holding ribbons or like narrow fabrics within a case and secure from injury by dust or light, and so as to allow ready inspection or sale of the goods; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the ribbon-holder, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a view of the ribbon-holder at one side. Fig. 2 is a like view with the end or head of the case removed to show the ribbon wound on the spool. Fig. 3 is a view of the opposite side of the holder. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the holder, showing how the end 6f the ribbon is clamped to the case; and Fig. 5 is a vertical central transverse section of the holder, taken on the line 00 an of Fig. 1.

The ribbon-holder consists, mainly, ofa case made'with a tubular outer wall, A, and two side parts or heads, 13 O, the head B being fixed within the tube Aby pins 1), driven through the tube into it, and the head 0 is provided with pins 0, which enter open slots at in the edge of the tube, to prevent this head turning in the tube.

The spool D, onto which the ribbon E is wound, either with or without a measuring tape or band, 6, between its coils, is provided with an axial shaft, (2, one reduced end of which has a bearing in the head B, to which it is held by the crank-arm F, the end of which is tapped as a nut to fit a still further reduced and threaded end part of the spool-shaft, a washer, f, being preferably interposed between the crank and the outer face of the head, which is formed with a recess, Z), to accommodate the crank-arm, which has an outer handle portion, f, hinged to it, so as to be extended for turning the spool and folded down flat onto the arm when not in use. The other reduced end of the spool-shaft has a bearing in the opposite head, O, and its end is bored and tapped to receive a screw, G, the head of which overlaps the head O, to hold it in place within the tube A of the holder.

The head 0 is recessed at its outer face at c, and in this recess is pivoted a bail, wire, or handle, H, which may be folded down flat within the recess or raised on its pivot to allow the entire holder to be carried conveniently, or hung up by the bail in a show-case or win dow to display the quality and color of the ribbon E on the spool, the outer end, 6, of the ribbon being passed through a guide-slot, a, made in the tube or edge wall A of the holdercase, and held under a spring-clamp, I, formed of a cross-head or clan1p-bar, t, which is fixed to the free end of an elastic plate, i", which is soldered or otherwise fastened at its other end to the face of the tube A, as clearly shown in the drawings, Aflange, a is formed around the guide-slot a, to prevent cutting or other injury to the ribbon by contact with a sharp edge of the tube at the slot.

The ribbon, edging, insertion, or other fabric to be kept in the holder is placed on the spool E by first removing the case-head O and passing the end of the ribbon or fabric through the slot a and then catching it under a wire, J, hooked at one end into the end of the spool and ranging across the periphery of the spool, and the ribbon or fabric may then be wound onto the spool until the desired quantity is measured or until the holdencase is full by turning the crank F f, and the loose end of the ribbon may then be caught under the clamp I, which holds'a few inches of the ribbon exposed to view, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The head 0 will now be replaced and secured by the screw G, and the holder is in condition to fully protect'the ribbon from dust and light, thereby preserving its fineness and color, and allowing the ribbon to be retailed in any required quantity by disengage ing its end from the clamp I and drawing it from the spool, which then revolves freely in the holder-case, and when the ribbon is cut the end of its unsold portion will be slipped under the clamp I, whereupon the entire de- ICO vice may be hung up for display by its handle H; or, 1 if desired,the holder may be piled either fiatwise or edgewise with like holders and without waste of room, as the crank F and handle H both fold entirely Within their respective recesses b c.

The holder may be made in any required size and of any suitable material, depending on the special use for which it may be desired. In wholesaling the goods the ribbon or fabric may be all wound onto the spools within the case, and the ribbon-exit slot a may be temporarily covered by a slip of paper or other material pasted over it to exclude dust and light entirely from the interior of the case.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a ribbon-holder, of a case having an edge Wall or tube, A, slotted at a for exit of the ribbon, and two side walls, B O, recessed at b a, respectively, a ribbonwall of the holder, and a screw, Gr, passed through the side into the shaft of the ribbonholding spool, substantially as herein set forth.

3. The combination, with a ribbon-holding case, having a ribbon-exit slot, (1, of an elastic clamp, I, having a plate, t", attached to the case, and a cross head or bar, z, adapted to press the loose end of the ribbon to the case, substantially as herein set forth.
