Be it known that 1, DAVID LANonNzn-N, a citizen. of the United States, residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, I

The goods to be sold may be any piece or'other textile goods but the container was especially desi ned to dispense gauze or cheese cloth.

1 he cheesecloth 18 is folded into preferably fo'ur thicknesses and made into a roll 19 formed upona tube 20, preferably made of paper or otherfibrous material, as a foundation. Through the. tube 20 is passed .a rod 21 adapted to be supported by or from the sides 12 and 13 of the container or box 11. The roll'19 and tube 20 rotate freely upon the rod 21..

Cleats 22 are provided on the box sides 12 and 13 and they are each provided with a tapered portion 24 and a recess '25 substan tially. at-the middle point of the cleat. The

cleats on the twosides are placed in register with; each other and the rod 20 is supported inthe recesses'25.

The'front enfis oredges of the/sides 12 and 13' are rovided'with bevelled grooves 26 and the front 14 offthe box has its edges v27 bevelled to be complementary to the bevelled grooves 26 (Fig.7). The bevelled grooves 26 do not extend into the bottom 15. The front 14 is provided with a bottom slot 28 and atop -slot29 through whic-hthe cheese cloth-can be withdrawn from the box. Slots in other locations can be provided when more suitable for the goods used. In-

stead of the slot 28, a, block or stop 30 can be used toprovide a space between the lower end of the frontl i and the bottom 15 of the box (Fig. 10) Further, for the slot 29,

In operation, the manufacturer forms the folded cheese cloth 18 into a roll 19 upon the tube 20 and'then passes the rod 21 through the. tube. The roll is ositioned in the box 1l'and' shipped to t e dealer. Upon receipt thereof, the dealer raises the front 14 and threads the cloth through either of the slots 28 or 29 as the case may be and in selling the cloth pulls out the quantity desired as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and cuts it ofi. In this way'the cloth is kept under the most sanitary conditions from maker to purchaser.

If the yoke 32 is used, it prevents the roll from slipping out of the recesses and the cross piece 33 insures the retraction of that part of the cloth remaining after the sold piece has been cut ofi'so that the remaining end is not exposed to dust.

The spring yoke may also be used with the fingers 84 and 35 when they are substituted for the cleats. By usingthe fingers instead of the cleats, the box is reversible, that is, the box can be placed either top up or top down and it will operate equally well For the fingers will hold the rod and its roll in place in either position.

It is, contemplated that the box may be used without the goods being on a roll and that-instead of being placed in the box on the roll, the cloth may be packed in the box in an accordion or any compress fold. That is, the box is designed to have the cloth dispensed therefrom, either from a roll in the box or by having the. cloth folded in the box.

What I claim is:

In a dispensing apparatus in combination a casing having an opening, a roll carrying a length of material to be dispensed within said casing, said material projecting through'said'casing, and means to retract said material through said casing opening.
