M TTORNE w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLYDE E. SWIOK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOB TO HAWLEY PULP AND PAPER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF OREGON.
INTERFOLDED-PAPER rack.
Application filed December 21, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE E. Swron, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and in the State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Interfolded-Paper Packs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for an object to provide a paper pack by which paper may be delivered from a receptacle in such a way that the withdrawal of the end unit shall place the next unit in proper position for removal.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a pack in which the units are so connected as to prevent disarrangement of the pack, while still permitting easy with drawal of any desired number of units when desired.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious and inpart specifically mentioned hereinafter.
lVhile my invention is capable of embodiment in many different forms, for purposes of illustration I have shown but one form thereof, which is to be considered merely as typical of the principle thereof. In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view of a single web made according to my invention, and shown partially unfolded;
Fig. 2 is a side edge view of a pack made up of webs such as shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, partially in section, of a similar pack, the layers forming the pack being slightly separated to make the construction more evident.
While the form of pack illustrated may be made in any desired manner, such pack is especially adapted to be produced by a machine such as disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 54,828, filed October 8, 1915, and entitled Paper interfolding machine.
Each one of the webs of paper 1 and 2, of
which the pack is made up, is partially severed t certain points along its length, in order that units or layers of paper may be readily detached therefrom. The particular way in which such partial severing is accomplished, is not important; I have shown each web as provided with rows of spaced slits 3, leaving narrow connecting strips 4 between them.
The two webs l and 2 are then interfolded Specification of Letters Patent.

in such a way that the portions of each web between adjacent slits 3, inclose the points upon the other web at Which these slits 8 are formed. In the illustrated embodiment, each Web is folded at the partially severed points, and also at points 5, midway between said partially severed points. The two webs are assembled with the folds 5 of one web inclosing the folds at the slits 3, on the other web, thus producing a symmetrical pack in which each layer is complementary to the adjacent ones. This symmetrical arrangement is not essential, however.
In the use of a pack made according to my invention, the end of one web which projects from the delivery receptacle, for example, the end of web 1, will be pulled out by the user, the fold 5 thus placing the adjacent end of web 2 in position to be next Withdrawn. The tension exerted upon web 1, in withdrawing it, is sufficient to sever the connecting strips 4 between the end unit and the remaining portion of the web with no more effort on the part of the user than ifsaid end unit had been previously entirely disconnected from the remainder of the web.
It Will also be apparent that both webs are continuous until actually withdrawn from the receptacle for use, thus making the pack less liable to become disarranged either in the process of making, transporting or placing into the receptacle, and making easier the rearrangement of the pack in case its webs shall have in any way become disarranged.
While I have described a specific form of my invention, it is obvious that many changes may be made which will still be within the principle thereof.
I claim:
1. A paper pack comprising interfolded webs of paper, said webs being partially severed at alternate points along their lengths, the portions of each web intermediate its partially severed points inclosing the partially severed points of the other web.
2. A paper pack comprising interfolded webs of paper, said webs being partially severed at alternate points along their lengths, both of said webs being folded at the partially severed points on each web.
3. A paper pack comprising interfolded webs of paper, said webs being partially severed at alternate points along their I lengths, both of said webs bein folded at midway between the I points intermediate the partia ly severed points on each web.
on each web.
5. A paper pack com rising interfolded webs of paper, said we s belng partially folded at at points midway therebetween, each of said last mentioned folds of each sheet inclosing a fold.
severed at alternate points along their v lengths,. each of said webs being the partially severed points an at a sheet. 1
6. A paper pack comprising interfolded webs of paper, said webs being weakened at alternate points along their lengths, and each of said webs bein folded at points between the weakened polnts, whereby the folds of each web each inclose a partially severed point on the other web. v v
