MARCIUS WILLSON, OF VINELAND, NEW JERSEY.
`EDUCATIONAL-CHART EXHIBITOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,092, dated December 20, 1904.
Application iled November 24, 1903. Serial No. 182,565. I
To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, MAnoIUs WILLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented Improvements in Educational-Chart Exhibitors, of which the .following Iis a specification.
My invention is an improved educationalchart exhibitor; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an educational-chart exhibitor embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of one of the rollers.
The frame or casingl 1 is here shown as of It may be of any suitable form and size. In opposite sides thereof near its upper and lower ends are right-angled slots 2, each having a horizontal branch extending to the rear side of the casing and open at its outer end. The ,said sides of the casing, near. the front edge thereof, are provided at suitable points with vertical bearing-slots 3, the upper ends of which are enlarged. A pair of rollers 4 are provided at their ends with trunnions 5 to bear in the said right-angled slots 2 and revolve in the lower ends of the vertical branches thereof, said slots enabling said rollers to be readily placed in the casing and as readily removed therefrom, as will be understood. Said rollers are each provided at one end with a friction-drum 6, a ratchet-wheel 7, and a crank 8. At that side of the casing from which the friction-drums of the rollers project are brackets 9, each having a vertical arm and a horizontal arm 11. Secured to the latter by pivot-screws 12 are spring-pawls 13, which are adapted to engage the ratchetwheels to prevent reverse rotation of the rollers andare also adapted to be turned laterally out of engagement with the ratchet-wheels.
To the vertical arm of each bracket 9 is hinged, as 'at 14, the upper end of a brakearm 15, adapted to bear against one of the friction-drums and having at its'lower end an adjusting-screw 16, engaging the horizontal arm of the bracket and adapted to be turned manually to compress the brake-arm against the friction-drum to the requisite extent to retard the rotation of the rollers as may be required.
The exhibits-such as maps, charts, designs, diagrams, pictures, or other illustrations-are drawn, printed, painted,or otherwise inscribed on a roll of paper or other suitable fabric (indicated at 17) and if it be of paper is preferably backed or reinforced by suitable cloth. This paper roll is attached at its opposite ends to the rollers 4 and reversely wound thereon. To facilitate the attachment of the ends of the said roll 17 to the said rollers, each of the latter is provided with a longitudinal segmentalV recess 18l to receive the end of the roll, the latter being secured therein by tacks or other suitable devices. when one of the rollersis revolved to wind up the roll 17 the other roller is turned by the tension of the said roll in the reverse direction. The roller from which the roll is to be unwound must be enabled to thus rotate in the reverse direction, which may be accomplished by disengaging its spring-pawl from its ratchet-wheel. The brake-arm by frictional contact with the friction-drums of the rollers retards the rotation of the latter, so that the roll 17 is kept stretched to the requisite extent to cause it to lie kflat and properly exhibit the maps, charts, designs, or other devices with which it is inscribed.
It will be understood that To bring the outer side of that portion of the roll 17 between the rollers 4 flush with or close to the face of the casing or frame, I provide a pair of direction-rollers 19, which have trunnions at their ends journaled in bearings formed by the vertical slots 3. The enlarged upper ends of the said slots facilitate the placing of the said `rollers in the frame or casing and their removal therefrom. That portion of the roll 17 which is between the rollers 4 passes over said direction-rollers 19.
From the foregoing description, taken -in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be' understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be IOO resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
I claim-- l. A device of the class described comprising a frame or casing, a pair of rollers mounted therein for rotation and each having a friction-drum, a ratchet-Wheel and a crank, an exhibit-roll having its ends attached to and Wound on the said rollers, a bracket secured to oneside of the frame, a brake-arm hinged to said bracket and coacting with the frictiondrum to retard rotation and keep the exhibitroll in a stretched condition between said rollers and spring-pawls to engage the respective ratchet-Wheels, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame or casing having L-shaped bearing-slots in the opposite sides thereof, a roller detachably mounted for rotation in each set of said slots, means to rotate said rollers, hinged brakes to retard the rotation thereof, ratchet-wheels on said rollers, an exhibit-roll connecting the said rollers, and directionrollers detachably mounted in another set ol the bearing-slots of the iframe or casing at points between the lirst-mentioned rollers and engaging that portion oi' the said exhibit-roll which is near the second-mentioned rollers, substantiallyT as described.
