have invented a new and useful Easel- Mounted Display Box and Lid and Cover Support Therefor, of which the following is a specification. I

Our invention consists ofa box which is adapted to be supported in'easeI-form, thus displaying and exhibiting its contents or goods to the best advantage, the box being provided with a supplemental cover so as to guard said contents from dust, dirt and improper handling, for sanitary purposes, adapting the lid to show the trade-mark, descriptlveness and other characteristics of the contents of the box, and connecting said cover with the lid proper of the box, so that the raising of the cover for access to the interior of the box will move said lid farther from the path of the cover-so as not to in terfere with the latter, or the lid may operate the cover in order to open the box according to thepositionof the dealer or the purchaser or customer of the goods.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrument-alities thereof may be varied, and so' it is to be understood'thatthe invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.

Referring to thedrawings-: 1 designates I a box, and 2 designates the lid thereof, the

latter being attached to the former by a flexible hinge as well known.

3 designates a transparent cover forming a supplemental lid which is placed over the box to protect the contents of the same from dust and'dirt, while permitting said consaid cover.

In the present case, the box is of the order of that adapted tocontain cigars to which goods, however, we do not limit our invention. hinge thereof, said lid and said cover thus being connected by said ears, sothat said cover and lid will move together as will be hereinafter more fully explained. The ears 5 are connected by the strip 6, which is continuousof the same, and composed preferably of a piece or bar ofmetal integral with said ears, said strip or bar and the ears embracing. the lid near the hinged edge of the same, the strip or bar bearing against the inner' face of the lid, supporting the same and bracing it and the rear portion. of the frame of-the supplemental cover.

by means of the knuckle and the pintleformed by the limbs 8, the vertical portions of the legs forming rigid supports for said limbs or pintle, whereby the lid and the supplemental cover are connected so as to operate in unison, so that the cover 3 in opening and closing may turn on said limbs, itbeing noticed that the legs occupy "positions on the rear of the sides of the box and extend below the bottom of the box so that the latter will be raised at its rear, thus placing the box in tilted position for the best effects of display of the contents thereof as on an easel, while the lid is tilted'rearwardly and held in such position by the ears 5., whereby thebrand, trade-mark or description of the goods in the .box printed, marked or otherwise placed on the face of the lid now exposed tothe front may be plainly -Fig. 1, is thrown backwardly to a seen and read-off thus directing attention to the style, quality or other characteristics of said goods.

The legs 7 are of the form of loops, onelimb 10 of each of which extends upwardly from the lower end of the limb 11 forming the bottom bends 12 on which said legs stand, while said limbs 10 are beneath the bottom of the box and engage with the same, and so support the box in inclined position, as an easel, the upper ends of said limbs being adapted to engage the bottom of the box and be; prevented from slipping there-. from, said ends being preferably pointed for that purpose. When the cover is raised in front to open the box, which may be done by a customer, the lid turns rearwardly to greater extent so as not to interfere with said cover, as it follows the same.

When the lid in its normal position, in eater extent, which may be done by a storeeeper or dealer, the cover is raised'to open the box. In either of these motions, the knuckles turn on the limbs 8 of the legs, as the axis of the cover and an additional axis for the lid 2, thus relieving the flexible hinge of the latter of strain. .It is evident that the device may be removed from the box, and the legs owing to their journaled nature on the knuckles 9 may be folded over the cover thus producing the device in fiat condition convenient for packing, carrying, handling, storing, etc.

Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A box having a lid and a supplemental cover, a brace bar on the rear side of the frame of said cover, inturned ears on the terminal of said bar, a longitudinally-extending knuckle on said side, and a leg depending from said knuckle and having. a

laterally extending limb which is adapted to occupy freely the same, and an upturned member which is adapted to engage the box to tilt the same and support it in such position.

2. In a box having a hinged lid and a supplemental cover, a knuckle on the rear side of said cover, ears at the ends of such side at an angle to the cover and adapted to engage the end-edges of said lid, and legs having inturned limbs rotatable in said knuckle and said legs being shaped to engage the box to clamp them on the same and to support the rear portion of the box in a raised position.

3. A device of the character stated, comprising a supplemental box-cover, ears secured to project from the ends of the rear edge of such cover and at a fixed angle thereto and adapted to engage the endedges of a" box-lid, a' knuckle at the rear edge of said cover, and a pintle in said knuckle and a looped leg one member of which extends from said pintle and is adapted to support the same, and the other member is adapted to engage the box as a connection and raise the box, placing it in tilted position.

4. The combination with a box having a hinged lid, of a supplemental cover for such box, a knuckle at the rear edge of said cover, a strip at the rear edge of the cover at an angle to the same and formed with ears at itsends adapted to clamp the endedges of the lid, and a pintle in said knuckle, said pintle being provided at' its ends with means for securing it to the box.
