CLCTHES-LINE FASTENEIR Patented Jan. 7,1913.
Appicaton led October 24, 1911.- Seral No. 656,414.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Bansin,`
city of Providence', iiil the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented lcertain new and useful Improvements Ain Clothes-Line Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion' relates to a device essentially designed for ,use as a fastener for lines on which clothes are suspended; and has forA its objects to provide two members having each a large flat bearing surface, to
act as holding points upon the sides of the line and extending parallel therewith; means to force one of said members into 'irmcontact upon. the line, and means for adj ustingthe device' to suit the size or thickness of line to be vclamped in position.
g In the accompanying sheet of drawings, lFigure 1 is a plan viewv ofmy improved device, `showing a clothes line secured thereon.' Fig. 2 is a side sectional vievsT taken on and centrally of the disk portion of said member a -is a downwardly extending head (1,2 havinga circular aperture i8 proJecting from a flat, bearing surface at4 of said memer. The member has a central annular i fiange extending downwardly from a flat bearin surface b2 of said member, and said flange Iias a slidingiitwithin the aperture a? of the member a.
A bolt c has one end pivotally connected by a pin d .to an integral cani part e of a hand lever el, this portion of said bolt having flat faces, as c1, c1', to it the sides of a rectangularl slotted openin through the closed end a o the head a2, and the other end of said bolt provided with a screw-threaded portion c2 which passes through an opening b3 formed through theclosed end b" of the clamping member b.
the clothes line 1 therebe-I- ai formed A nut f on the threaded portion of the bolt c is made to bear against the top ofthe clamping member b.
An expanding coil spring g surrounds'the bolt c and is interposed between the respec- 'tive closed ends a and Zr* of the clamping members a and b.
The connecting portionof the hand lever 'e1 is bifurcated to receive the iiattened partcl of the bolt c, in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and the surrounding part of this ,portion of said lever disposes a cam face,
as e, for contact upon the flat bearing face a7 'of the head a2.
Tosecure the clothes line 1 to the device,
the lever e is brought to its dotted position shown` in Fig. 2,when the lowest rise of cam e is then had upon the head ft2-and allows the action of spring g' to carry upward the clamping member a, toits dotted position of parts shown in'said figure. A
The space betweenthe' members' a and b is now sufficient to pass the line 1 between their bearing surfaces a4 and b2, after which the lever/is swung to its full line position shown4 and thereby cause the member b to force down and firmly secure the line in place upon the device.
The highest point of the came causes the device to be brou ht to a clamped position and in order to old the f lever from displacement while in thisy position this point of its cam is made flat, as more clearly shown at e2 in the dotted position of said lever. The members a and b are designed to eX- tend parallel with the clothes line 1 and by having these members provided with large iiat surfaces, as a4 and bfor contacting;
upon said line, serves to prevent theflattei from becoming "y ragged or fragile atH its points of securing.
By means of the' nut f the latter'may be turned one way -or the other in adjusting the clamping, memberv b, to obtain the proper space desired between the members a and. b, for enteringv of the clothes 'line upon the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure byLetters Eat-A eiit is;-- In combination, a disk-shaped fixed ]aw having a central bored hub, said yjaw provided with a rectangular' opening in itshub; a disk-shaped movable' jaw having `an anii'io nularflangeJ slidable in the bore of the hub,
\ one end and passing loosely through the` Said movable javvprovided with a circular opening; a bolt having a screw-thread at opening of said movable ja-W and the other end'o said bolt having opposed flat sides to prevent turning inthe opening of Said fixed jaw and said bolt provided With a peroration through its flattened part; a thumbnut engaging the thread ot' said bolt to permit adjusting Said movable jaw; a pin through the perforation of said bolt; an eX- panding' coil spring surrounding the latter,
faces to bear against the hnb to permit said lever to carry inwardly' the movable jaw to a normal fixed position, as shown and for the purpose Speoilied.
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
