Description
N0- 830,787. I PATENTED SEPT, 11, 1906. G. E. HILL.
NUT. LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAR-15, 1906.
CHARLES E. HILL, OF RUTHERFORDTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
. NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
A licati fil d March 15,1906. Serial No. 306 18s.
To all whom it 771/661] concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutherfordton, county of Rutherford, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nut-locks, and has for its object to provide a device of the class named that will be simple in operation and construction and constitute an effective lock capable of being released either manually or by the wrench employed to operate the nut.
To this end the invention comprises a nut provided at one side with two projections or ears embracing a longitudinal slot having an enlargement at one end in the form of a circular recess, in which is pivoted a thumblever, the upper portion of said lever being provided with a lug or projection adapted to pass through an opening in the nut and engage a slot in the axle or bolt upon which the nut is screwed and the end of the lever forming a cam which provides a novel means of releasing the locking-lever by the use of a V- shaped instrument inserted between the nut and said cam.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the nut adapted to receive the locking-lever. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the nut and lock in operative relation. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the lock in its releasing position. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the slotted axle or bolt, and Fig. 6 illustrates a simple and effective wrench for releasing and operating the nut.
In the drawings the nut A is provided at one side with two projections or ears a and a, embracing a slot 1) and circular recess 0. Fulcrumed at din the slot 1) on pin e is a lever B, so constructed as to fit in and conform to the slot and circular recess. About midway be tween the fulcrum and outer end of said 10- ver is a lug or projection g, and the portion of the lever above the lug is curved outwardly, forming a cam 7r, which constitutes a ready means for operating said lever, as will be more fully described hereinafter. The slot 6 is provided with an opening f in the bottom thereof, through which the lug g of the lever projects when the device is in its locked position. Mounted in the circular recessc and operating between the bottom of said recess and the round end of the lever B is a spring 'i, which tends to hold said lever in its locked or operative position. hile the nut is being screwed on or unscrewed, the lug g is held out of engagement with a slot h in the bolt or axle by hand or by a specially-constructed wrench, as shown in Fig. 6.
The invention is conveniently illustrated as applied to a cap-nut; but it is obvious that it may be applied to any kind of nut.
In operating the device an ordinary spanner-wrench is employed, having a portion of one side tapered or swaged. As the wrench is put over the head of the nut for screwing or unscrewing the same the tapered or swaged portion 7', acting against the tension of spring 1', is wedged down between the nut and upper or cam-like part k of the lever, drawing lug 9 out of slot h, as shown in Fig. 4, and permitting the nut to be screwed to the desired position. The wrench is then of course removed, allowing spring 4 to force lug g through the aperture f in the nut into the slot h on the bolt or axle, and thereby locking said nut to said bolt or axle.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a nut-lock, the combination of aslotted and threaded bolt or axle, a nut threaded to engage the threads on said bolt and having a recess at one side, a lever fulcrumed'in said recess, and a lug on the outer end of said lever adapted to enter the slot of the bolt, said outer end of the lever having also a cam-surface projecting outwardly from said nut so that upon applying a spanner-wrench to the nut, a part of the wrench will pass between the cam-surface and the nut, and release the lever from the slot of the bolt.
2. In a nut-lock, the combination of a slotted and threaded bolt or axle, a nut threaded to engage the threads on said bolt and having on one side two projections or ears embrac ing a slot and circular recess, said slot having an opening in the bottom thereof, a lever fulcrumed in said slot between the opening and the circular recess, and having a lug on the ICC outer end thereof adapted to pass through In testimony whereof I afilx my signature the opening in said nut and engage the slot in presence of two Witnesses.
in said bolt or axle, and a ooil-sprin operating between the bottom of said oir eular re- CHARLES HILL cess and the other end of said lever for forc- Witnesses:
ing said lug into the slot in the side of the J. V. MGFARLAND,
axle or bolt. 'LANNIE CALLAHAN.
