JOHN HOLTZMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '5, 1911.
Application filed May 9, 1911. Serial No. 626,091.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HOLTZMAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety cooks for gas and other fixtures and its object is to provide means to be attached to the cock to prevent its accidental turning and to avoid accidents which frequently happen in consequence of the gas being turned on unintentionally as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings, wherein, V
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas bracket showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the device in its inoperative position. Fig. 3 is a front View of the safety device. Fig. 4: is a detail sectional view.
The device is adapted tobe applied to an ordinary thumb cock by means of a set screw 5, working in one side of a jaw 6, formed in a block 7 the cock fitting in the jaw and being held in place bymeans of the screw, while in the lower end of the block is pivoted a pawl 8 under pressure of a spring 9, confined between the pawl and a bracket 10.
At the front end of the block 7 are jaws 11 between which are pivoted a stud 12 depending from a plate 13 from which arises a yoke 14 adapted to embrace the pipe 15-01: the gas bracket. As will be seen in Fig. 1, when the device is attached to the cock 16 and the yoke 14 in place, it will be impossible for any one to turn the cock so that the passage of gas through the bracket is possible.
When it is desired to use the gas and to turn the cock l6,'the yoke 14 is turned downward as shown in Fig. 2, and it is then possible to turn the cook 16 with the device attached thereto. The yoke 14 is held upward in its normal position by means of the pawl 8 playing in a recess 17 in the stem 12, and before the yoke is removed from its place it is necessary to release the stud 12 by pressing the outer end of pawl 8 upward against the spring 9 when the yoke is then free to be swung downward.
With such a device attached to a gas fixture it is impossible for the cock to be turned until released, thus preventing accidents resulting from the turning of the cock by articles of clothing being hung thereon or by children or other irresponsible people. This device may be also used on water outlets to prevent the turning on of water where damage may be caused.
It is obvious that the device may be modified and the parts otherwise arranged without departing from the essential features above described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. In a safety device for cooks, the combination with a forked block having a set screw to attach it to the cock, of a yoke hinged in the block and having an indentation, of a pawl adapted to lit in the indentation and hold the yoke in its operative position.
2. In a safety device for cooks, the combination with a block having a recess for the reception of a cock, of a set screw to engage the cook, a yoke with a stem hinged in the block and having an indentation, apawl for the indentation and a spring to hold the pawl in its operative position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HOLTZMAN.
