FIREPLACE.
1,049,262, Specification of Letters intent.
Application tiled September 18, 1910. Serial No. 582,4;-
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, Gaonon L. Panama, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Johns, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented an Improved Fireplace, of which the following is a specification. 3
My invention is an improvement in that class of fireplaces in which the side walls converge to the rear and a horizontal ledge or step extends between such walls.
My invention is embodied in the construct1on, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly indicated in the claim.
I have embodied this rinciple of construction in the fireplace illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents avertical cross-section of my improved fireplace; Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section approximately taken on a line AA of Fig.
Referring now more articularly to the construction of my firep ace, (1 represents a portion of the top outer wall, and b the throat to the chimney. The rear is concaved approximately as shown. A ledge 11 is arranged at the apex of the angle of the converging side walls 1 and g and at the rear of t e iearth Z, the ledge having a vertical front wall. It will be noted that a consider'able space a is thus provided between the converging walls and above the ledge d. By this arrangement, air is prevented from entering at a point below the led e, but passes along the convergin side wa ls and up over the ledge d in or er to reach the space e. In other words, when a fire is built in the grate h, the air from the front W111 enter through the bottom of the grate and thence along the rear surface, 0, to the throat of the chimney, while the air entering at z, that.1s, in the u per part of the fireplace will drive the ames and products of combustion back into the recess e and compel them to take the course indicated by the arrows. The fuel-supporting member or grate It extends between the side walls f, g, or the entire length of the ledge, so that no air can rise over the latter without first passin through the zone of combustion.
ractical use of this invention has demonstrated its superiority over fire-places of the ordinary construction and that a maximum calorific efiect is produced with a minimum combustion of fuel.
I claim:
An improved fire-place formed of vertical side walls converging to the rear, the rear of the fireplace being gradually curved forward from the bottom upward, a horizontal ledge extending between the lower rear por tions of said side walls, and a fuel-sup orting member situated in front of said edge and extending the length of the latter between the side walls, and thereby excludin the entrance of air to the space above Stilt ledge without having assed through the zone of combustion, as escribed.
