CUTTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 1, 1911, Serial No. 641,739.
Patented Dec. 31,1912. Renewed November 12, 1912. Serial No. 731,039.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. SGHNORR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to devices for cutting lengths of paper or such material from rolls, and is particularly adapted to be used by paper hangers to cutthe required strips from the roll.
This invention has for its object to provide a cutting device which when in use is in the form of a square, the handle of the square being so constructed that when the device is not used one section of the handle may be brought in alinement with the first section and the two sections turned so that they may rest upon the blade of the square to permit a plate mounted upon one section of the handle to overlap the cutting edge of the blade and protect the same.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein t Figure 1 is a plan view of the cuttlng device in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device in a folded position, part of one of the handle sections being broken away. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the cutter in a position to be used. Fig. i is an edge view of Fig. 2 looking toward the rear edge of the blade. Fig. 5 is a section along the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that this invention comprises a blade 1 which is provided with a toothed-edge 2. This blade is preferably formecl of steel but may be formed of any suitable metal, and is provided at one end with a diagonal slot 3 which leads from a notch 4 forming a shoulder 4. The blade is also provided with openings adjacent each end the object of which will be brought out hereinafter.
The handle of the device is formed of two sections 5 and 6 which are connected together by means of the hinge 7, the section Gbeing narrower than the section 5. The section 5 is pivotally connected with the blade 1 by means of the bolt 8 which passes through the opening formed in the slotted end of the blade. When the device is in use the smaller section 6 is twined back upon the larger section 5 and overlaps the end of the blade 1, and is held in place by a second bolt 9. A strip 10 is secured to the edge of the section 5 by any suitable means reduced end portion 11 forming a shoulder 12 upon which the blade rests with the shoulder 4: engaging the strip 10.
From an inspection of Fig. 1 will be seen that this device is used in the same manner that the carpenter uses his square, that is, by placing the device upon the edge of the cutting board with the blade extending across the paper to be cut. The paper is grasped with one hand and the cutter held with the other and the paper torn upon the edge 3 of the blade.
hen the device is not in use the bolt 9 is removed and the handle section 6 twined back in alinement with the section 5. The blade is then turned to the position as shown in Fig. 2 with the handle sections resting upon the blade and extending longitudinally thereof. The bolt 9 is passed through the opening in the outer end of section 6 and through the opening in the opposite end of the blade 1 from the slotted end, so that the sections 5 and 6 will be held in the position as shown in Fig. 2. When in this position the strip 10 overhangs the toothed-edge 2 and protects it. The ends of the bolts 8 and 9 prevent the cutting edge of the blade from touching the surface upon which the blade is resting when the cutter is in a folded position.
In order to move the blade from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, the blade is turned upon the bolt 8 in an are covering 270 degrees, thus swinging the blade so that instead of extending at right angles to the handle, it extends parallel thereto.
What I claim is A device of the character described comprising a cutting blade provided with a slot adjacent one end and with openings adjacent both ends, a handle section pivotally connected with the slotted end of said blade, a second handle section hinged to first mentioned said handle section and adapted to l of said second mentioned handle section with be twined back upon the said first mentioned l the free end of said blade. 10 handle section and overlapping the slotted In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my end of said blade, means for removaloly sesignature in presence of two Witnesses.
curing said second handle section in place, FREDERICK J. SCHNORR.
said sections adapted to be opened and Witnesses:
swung to lie longitudinally upon said blade, F. W. DIOKE,
and means for connecting with the free end G120. H. DIOKE.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G.
