Description
June 27, 1967 c. w. SOOTER PROTECTIVE GUARD FOR SAFETY RAZOR Filed Oct. 22, 1965 CLAUDE W. SOOTER ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,327,388 PRGTECTIVE GUARD FOR SAFETY RAZOR Claude W. Sooter, Fort Worth, Tex. (714 E. Pine, Lafayette, La. 70501) Filed Get. 22, 1965, Ser. No. 562,191 1 Claim. (Cl. 30-90} This invention relates to protective guards for double edge safety razors of the type wherein the head of the razor is longitudinally divided and hingedly mounted at the four corners of the head plate. Particularly, the invention has reference to a detachable guard for use when traveling or at other times when protection of the blade edges is required.
An object of the invention is to provide a razor blade guard which will fit all makes of razors of the described class.
Another object of the invention is to provide a razor blade guard which is detachable but firmly held in place by operation of the mechanism of the razor for hingedly actuating the referred to divided head.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor and showing the present razor blade guard in place.
FIGURE 2 is a transverse schematic view of the head portion of the razor and showing the position of the divided head in its position when initially applying the present blade guard.
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 but showing the divided head in a closed position and showing the elements of the latter gripping the tongues of the present blade guard against the sides of the razor blade locating bar.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the head elements in closed position and showing the blade locating bar relative thereto.
FIGURE 5 is an inverted perspective view of the present guard and illustrating the position of the parallel tongues.
FIGURE 6 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of a modified form of the invention, and
FIGURE 7 is a further enlarged perspective view showing a further modified form of construction.
In the drawing, the number 10 generally designates a safety razor of the type having parallel arcuate head elements 11, the inner edges of which lie alongside a blade locating bar 12 when in their closed position. The position of the blade 13 is shown in FIGURES 2 and 3. It is to be understood that the illustration of the razor is schematic and represents at least two commercially available safety razors. Accordingly, the razor is not herein described in detail.
A razor blade protector as illustrated in FIGURES l and 5 is comprised of a generally rectangular panel 15 3,327,338 Patented June 2?, I967 slightly larger than the head of the razor 1t), and which panel may be arcuate in transverse section to conform with the curvature of the head elements 11 when the latter are in their closed position. There are depending side and end flanges 16 and 17, and the end flanges may have notches 18 near their ends so as to lend flexibility to all flanges whereby the guard is not so likely to be accidently removed from the razor by bumping against an object.
The primary feature of the present invention has to do with parallel tongues 24} as shown in FIGURE 5, and which tongues are spaced apart so as to straddle the razor blade locating bar 12 and are of a thickness so as to be engaged by adjacent edges of the head elements 11.
The form of the invention illustrated in FIGURE 6 is like the foregoing, except the tongues 20a are thicker at their extending ends than Where they are attached to the panel 15. In order to mold this construction as a single unit a tooling slot 21 is provided in the panel between the lengths of the tongues.
The form of the invention illustrated in FIGURE 7 is like the foregoing except the tongues 20b have transverse ribs 22. on their outer surfaces for better engagement by the edges of the head elements.
In all forms of the invention the present guard is made of synthetic resin, for example, linear polyethylene, which is somewhat resilient and to a limited extent is compressible. In all forms of the invention it is the compressible aspect of the material which makes possible the gripping action of the head elements when the tongues 20 are pressed against the locating bar.
In operation, the end portion 23 of the razor handle 24 is turned, causing the head elements 11 to open and whereby the blade 13 is placed in the razors head. The direction of the end portion 23 is then reversed, causing the head to close and engage the tongues 20, 20a or 20b and press the same against the longitudinal bar 12.
The invention is not limited to the exemplary construction herein shown and described, but may be made in various ways within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A protective razor blade guard for a double edge safety razor of the type having a longitudinally divided hinged head and a razor blade locating bar between adjacent edges of said divided head when in closed position, said protective guard comprising a generally rectangular panel of a size larger than said head, flanges around the sides and ends of said panel, and parallel tongues of compressible material on the surface of said panel and spaced a distance apart to fit over said locating bar, the thickness of each said tongue being such that the same may be engaged on each side of said bar and adjacent edges of said divided head.
