To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VINCENZO SANSE- vnnzn, a citizenof the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in chalk holders, particularly adapted for use in chalking the tips of billiard and pool cues.

The object of the invention is to provide a chalk holder which may be locked in active position to prevent surreptitious removal of the chalk.

To the accomplishment of the recited object and others subordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention re sides in that construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.

Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view taken along line et-1 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamps partly broken away to more clearly show the construction.

Generally speaking, my invention in volves a pair of clamps adapted to conform to the standard size of the blocks ofchalk ordinarily used in playing pool and billiards, the said clamps having upwardly extending shank portions which are hingedly connected together and otherwise arranged to form an inclosure for a cooperating screw designed to be adjusted to secure the desired engagement of the clamping members with the chalk.

Referring more particularly to the drawings for a detail description of my invention the numerals 1 and 2 designate a pair of clamps provided at their lower edges with teeth, as 3, and having vertically disposed angular fianges 4:, one upon each end thereof. Each clamp has its upper portion bent inwardly as at 5, and these in turn merge into vertical shanks, as 6 and 7 hingedly connected adjacent their lower extremities by means of the integrally formed projections 8 and pins 9, while the upper extremities of the shanks are flexed inwardly upon opposite sides so that two projections 10 carried by the shank 6 inter-fit with respect to a pair of projections 11 formed on the shank 7, and in this way present an inclosure,' the function of which will be presently described. If desired the upper terminal of the shank 7 may be extended beyond the plane of its flanges 11 to constitute a projection 7 which has an opening 7 to facilitate hanging or suspending l{lie complete holder from a spring or the At a point approximately medially of the vertical extent of each shank there is provided a transverse instruck or ridge portion 12, and formed as a rigid part of the shank 7 is a horizontally disposed plate 13 having a screw-threaded opening 14: intended to receive the shank 15 of a screw 16, the body portion 17 of which has substantially the contour of an inverted frustum, a squared head 18 being disposed upon the opposite side of the body 17 and adapted to be operated by means of a key, as 19;

The body portion 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, normally occupies a position intermediate the ridges 12 of the shanks 6 and 7 In practical operation, the shank 15 is unscrewed from the plate 14 by means of the key 19 until the body 17 disengages the ridges 12. This operation permits of the upper extremities of the shanks 6 and 7 being contracted with a resultant expansion of the clamps or jaws 1 and 2. The block of chalk 20 is then inserted between the clamps and the hereinbefore described operation is reversed, and the body portion 17 of the screw being constrained downwardly in engagement with the ridges 12, thereby causing the clamps or jaws to be brought toward each other and in effective engagement with the opposite sides of the block of chalk. It will be noted that when the screw has reached its lowermost position the head 18 thereof will be sufficiently below the upper extreme edges of the shanks 6 and 7 to preclude any possibility of the same being tampered with by inserting a pen-knife, or the like. It will also be noted that the block of chalk may be adjusted in any desired position with respect to the jaws 1 and 2, and this is considered an important feature, for as the chalk becomes worn it usually assumes the form of a shell, the walls of which would quickly be broken were it not for the fact that the block can be moved outwardly to permit the teeth 3 to engage the chalk at different points.

It should be understood that in its broader aspect the invention eomprehends the employment not only of the various means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. While the arrangement shown is thought at the present time to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations thereof as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed, is a 1. In a chalk holder, the combination of a pair of jaws, each jaw having a shank portion, said shank portions being pivotally connected together, one of said shank portions having a rigid extension provided with an aperture, a screw adapted to operate in said aperture, and means cooperating with said screw for causing a closing of the jaws.

2. In. a chalk holder, the combination of a pair of jaws, a shank carried by each jaw, said shanks being pivotally connected to gether and presenting an inclosure, and vertically movable means for operating said jaws, the top of said means terminating short of the top of said inclosure in active and inactive positions.

3. In a chalk holder, the combination of a pair of jaws, each jaw having shank portions pivotally connected together, one of said shanks having a right angular exten sion below the top thereof, and means ver tieally movable through said extension and engageable with the shanks for closing the jaws.

4C. In a chalk holder, the combination of a pair of jaws, said jaws having shank portions pivotally connected together, said shanks having a pair of oppositely disposed cooperating projections, one of said shanks having a second projection lying in a. plane at right angles to said first mentionedprojections, and means movable through said second projection and engageable with the pair of projections for closing said aws.
