CHARLES W. FRANCIS, OF CONWAY, ARKANSAS.
LOOK FOR LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented. Dec. 10, 1912.
Application filed March 2, 1912. Serial No. 681,078.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WV. FRANCIS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Conway, in the count-y of Faulkner and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Lock for Lamp-Chimneys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful lamp burner having a plurality of clips, two being rigidly fixed in position while the third is pivotally mounted to the burner, for securely holding the lamp chimney to the burner.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a new and useful structure of this nature having essential and desirable features of construction.
One of the'fe-atures of the construction is the provision of an inter-engaging depression and lug for holding the pivoted clip locked in engagement with the burner rim, to prevent the same from being accidentally released.
Another feature of the construction is to strengthen the engaging arm of the clip, by doubling the same, the extremity of the folded portion engaging the burner rim to assist in holding the clip closed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a lamp and chimney, showing the application of the improved clips. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the burner, showing the clips secured to the rim, two being rigidly fixed, while the other is pivot-ally mounted. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the burner rim, showing the pivoted clip in a closed position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 3, showing the interengaging locking depression and lug. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 3, showing the doubled strengthening engaging portion of the pivoted clip.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the bowl of the lamp, while 2 denotes the burner. Secured to the rim of the burner are two U-shaped clips 3, by means of rivets 4:. The engaging arms of these clips are of double thicknesses, because of the arms being long enough, so as to be folded upon themselves.
The extremities of the folding portions engage the burner rim, in the man-- ner shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, to assist in holding the clips in position. The engaging arms are denoted by the numeral 5. Pivoted at 6 to the burner rim is a third clip 7, which is also U-shaped in cross section. The engaging arm 8 of the clip 7 is constructed similar to the arms of the clips 3. However, the extremity of the folding portion of the arm 8 assists in holding the clip 7 closed, by clamping the burner rim between the end of the folded portion and the base 9 of the clip 7. The engaging arm is made smaller in length than the length of the base portion of the clip 7, so that when the clip is thrown from engagement with the shoulder 10 of the lamp chimney 11, the engaging arm 8 will be entirely free of the shoulder 10. When the clip 7 is thrown, so that the engaging arm 8 engages the shoulder 10, the clip is held against accidental displacement by the inter-engaging of the depression 12 and lug 13. The depression is formed in the clip 7, while the lug 13 is formed on the rim of the burner. The clip 7 is slightly sprung, when it is desired to lock the same closed. The base of the clip terminates in an ear 14 at one end, by which one may unlock the clip by imparting a. downward pressure thereon, so as to free the depression 12 from the lug 13. The coaction of the lug and the depression is in sured and reinforced by the end of the folded portion clamping the burner rim between said end and the base 9 of the clip 7 From the foregoing it will be noted, there has been devised a simple, essential and desirable clip for holding a lamp chimney to the burner, and including means for locking the clip in engagement with the lamp chimney,1 and one which has been found practica The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, a lamp burner having its rim constructed with a lug, a lamp chimney having an annular shoulder at its base mounted on the burner, a plurality of clips carried by the burner, one of said clips being constructed of a single piece of metal pivoted to the burner and provided with an overhanging arm having a folded portion conforming to the contour of the arm; the base of said clip having a depression to receive said lug, the folded portion constituting means between the end of which and the base of the clip the burner rim is clamped, and a finger piece forming an integral part of the clip.
2. In combination, a lamp burner having its rim constructed with a lug, a lamp chimney having an annular shoulder at its base mounted on the burner, a plurality of clips carried by the burner, one of said clips being constructed of a single piece of metal pivoted to the burner and provided with an overhanging arm having a folded portion conforming to the contour of the arm; the base of said clip having a depression to receive said lug and a finger piece forming 15 an integral part of the clip.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES W. FRANCIS.
