Specification of Letters Patent. Application led August 23, 1911.
gers as on account of its flexibility will automatically adjust itself to the size of finger on which it is worn. Secured to one side of the ring 1 on that portion of its arc consisting of but a single thickness of material, is the guide casing 2 having a rectangular passage 3 extending therethrough, said guide 2 being preferably either set with a stone on its outer face or being engraved to present the appearance of an ordinary seal or signet ring. Slidably engaged in the passage 3 are the rear ends of the diverging resilient arms A having rounding jaw portions 5 at one end thereof and having their other ends secured to the hollow block or casing 6 of rectangular form and of size to pass through the passage 3.
lt will thus be observed that the arms L1 are slidably engaged in the passage 3 and that rearward movement of the arms in the passage causes To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that l, ARcriiBALD S. Mac- LELLAN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Cigarette-Holders, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders and has for its leading object the provision of an improved device of this character which will have portions for grasping a cigarette and will further be provided with an adjustable linger engaging member to prevent staining of the ngers when smoking and to eliminate the necessity for touching the cigarette either to pick the same up from a box or to remove the same from the mouth.
The further object of my invention is the provision of a cigarette holder having adjustable clamping arms and having improved means for facilitating the ready shifting of said cigarette grasping means and for normally preventing detachment of the grasping means from the nger engaging ring.
Another obj ect of my invention is the provision of an ornamental and attract-ive iinger ring so constructed that a cigarette grasping clip may be attached thereto when desired or readily removed therefrom without in any way destroying the beauty of the ring.
Other objects and advantages of my improved cigarette holder will be readily apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and it will be understood that l may make any modifications in the specific structure shown and described within the scope of my claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.
Figure 1 represents the arms to spring inward toward each other to bring the jaw portions 5 into clamping engagement with a cigarette 7. IThe cigarette may be either removed by hand from its box and then grasped by the jaws 5, or said jaws may be engaged around the cigarette and the same lifted from the box by the jaws, my device thus eliminating all necessity for handling a cigarette when it is desired to smoke the same.
To enable me to readily slide the resilient arms 11 and to prevent said arms from being accidentally withdrawn from the passage S, l pass transversely of the casing 6 the pin 8 on which is pivoted the locking pawl 9, said pawl being held in its open position when the lower end thereof bears against the spring 10 carried by the casing. Said pawl 9 normally depends downward where it may be engaged by a thumb or linger nail to facilitate rearward movement of the jaws, when in this position the looking pawl being adapted to contact with the edge of the guide member 2 to prevent with- `drawal of the gripping arms. `When it is desired to remove the gripping arms from the ring it is merely necessary to swing the pawl 9 rearwardly on its pivot to lie in alinement with the passage 3 at the time when the lower end of the pawl 9 contacts with the upper end of the spring, thus allowing the arms to be easily disengaged from the ring.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawa view of my improved cigarette holder in use. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the invention, and Fig. A represents an end view of the same.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the flexible or automatically adjustable finger engaging ring which has its ends overlapping each other in the mannery of a slide bracelet, whereby the ring may be readily slipped onto different sizes of finings the construction and use of my'imf proved cigarette holder will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple and attractive device of this character which will satisfactorily engage and hold a cigarette and which Will present an ornamental appearance either When in use or when not in use.
I claim:
A cigarette holder, comprising` a inger ring having a passage extending therethrough,'resilient arms slidably engaged in the passage, and a locking member pivoted at the rear of the arms and normally preventing' Withdrawal of the arms from the 15 passage.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
