To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN M. CoRYELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Ash-Can Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;

My invention relates to a lid-opening device for refuse receptacles, and'm ore particularly relates to ash cans.

An object of my invent-ion is to provide a simple form of cover separable from the can which may be opened by laying the shovel with the ashes thereon on a projecting bracket, the weight of which shovel and its contents will automatically open the cover to permit the quick insertion of the ashes into the can, the withdrawal of said shovel automatically closing the cover.

I attain the above-outlined object by constructing the cover of two parts hinged together, one part adapted to be removably fastened to the can and carrying a support projecting forwardly of the other part, which support forms a fulcrum for a lever. One end of said lever is attached to said other part, and the opposite end of the lever projects forwardly of the can, to afford a rest for the shovel.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention attached to a can, parts being broken away to show the attachment, and the lid and its attached parts shown in raised position in dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is a plan view looking down upon the device shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 1, I have shown a can A of any suitable construction having a reinforcing band B. Upon the can is the cover C more particularly forming the subject-matter of my invention. The cover, as shown, comprises two parts 8 and 4, said parts being equal and the part 1 constituting a lid. The parts 3 and 1 are pivotally connected along a diameter by means of a hinge 5. The cover is removably held in position on the can in any suitable manner, and, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1, an L-shaped rim 6 depends from the under side of the cover adapted to fit within the can A and contacting with the upper inner wall thereof. Depending from the rear edge of the part 3 of the cover and fastened to the top of the same by means of rivets 7, which rivets also act to hold the rear portion of the rim 6 in position, is an L-shaped bracket 8, in screw-threaded engagement with the depending portion 9 of which is a thumb screw 10 adapted to be brought into engagement with the side of the can A just below the band B; which construction, it will be seen, will hold the cover in position on the can.

The lid 4 is adapted to be raised by a toggle link construction comprising a U-shaped member 11, the crotch portion 12 of which is suitably fastened to the part 3 in rear of and parallel to the hinge 5 by means of rivets 13. The sides 14; and 15 of the U- shaped member 11 extend forwardly on opposite sides of the lid, each end of which contains a rivet 16 forming the pivotal connection of a U-shaped lever 17, the crotch 18 of which acts as a support for the shovel carrying the contents to be dumped into the can. Each end of the lever 17 carries a pivot-ing rivet 19 forming a hinge connection with the lower end of a link 20, the upper ends of said links being pivotally connected to the opposlte ends of a bar 21, fastened by means of rivets 22 to the lid and extending parallel to the hinge connection 5 and the crotch portion 12.

Due to the weight of the lid, it is normally closed, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. By resting the shovel upon the crotch 18 the lever 17 is depressed, swinging on its pivots 16 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus acting through the links 20 and bar 21 to raise the lid 4 and permitting the insertion of the ashes carried on the shovel into the can. As soon as the shovel is removed from the crotch 18, the lid will swing toward its closed position and prevent the spread of dust from the can. It will be noted, furthermore, that when the lid has been raised in the manner just described the operator may empty the contents of the shovel into the can and the fact that the shovel is then within the can will provide for a control of the automatic closing of the lid whereby slamming thereof will be prevented by contact with the shovel.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A cover comprising two parts hinged together and adapted to be removably secured on a can, a supporting member extending from one of said parts, a lever pivoted intermediate its length to said supporting member, and a link connection between one end of said lever, and the other part of said cover, whereby pressure on the opposite end of said lever will raise one of said cover parts relative to the other.

2. The combination with a receptacle, of a cover therefor, said cover comprising a part rigidly connected to the receptacle, the other part of the cover being movable with respect to the first mentioned part, and means to move said movable cover part, said means comprising a support connected to the stationary cover part and extending therefrom outwardly beyond the movable part, a lever pivoted to the outer end of Y said support andhaving'one end extending normally above the cover, and a link connection between the opposite end of said lever and said movable cover part, whereby, when force is applied to the first mentioned end of the lever downwardly, the movable cover part will be lifted, substantially as set forth.
