ELISI-IA B. NOEL, OF CORDELL, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO CHARLES O. CARLISLE, OF CORDELL, OKLAHOMA.
DOOR-SECURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
Application led .Tuly 8, 1912. SerialyNo. 708,341.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIsHA B. NOEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cordell, in the county of Vashita and State of Oklahoma, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to the class of builders hardware, and more particularly to door securers.
The invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficientconstruction of door-holding device which is composed of comparatively few parts that may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled, the device being strong and not liable to get out of order and being compact so that it may be easily carried around in a travelers hand bag, or in the pocket.
The invention also has for one of its objects an improved device of this character which may be easily applied to a door on the inside of a room so as to securely hold the door tightly closed, whereby the occupant of the room may feel secure against intrusion and whereby at the same time, the door will be held firmly and prevented from rattling or from admitting rain or snow. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
l/Vith these and other objects in View, as
will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the part-s that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to .the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of a door and its casing illustrating the application of the device, the door-securing device being shown in section with parts in elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the casing engaging member. Fig. 3 is a section as seen on the line 3 3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a view of a modified form of the device, one part being shown in section, and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of another modification.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
In that form or embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 1, the numeral 1 designates the door casing engaging member which is in the form of a preferably tapered metal bar provided near one end and on one face with a lug 2 designed for insertion in the strike or keeper for the door latch. The casing engaging member l is also formed with a plurality of apertures 3 eX- tending therethrough for purposes of adjustment, as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth, and its end opposite the lug 9. is preferably curved laterally, as indicated at 4, to form a finger piece, whereby it may be conveniently manipulated.
My improved door securer also includes a latch arm 5 which is in the form of a rod,-
one end of which is designed to be inserted in any of the apertures 3 of the casing engaging member 1, and the other end of which is formed with a head 6 having a threaded opening 7 extending therethrough. A threaded adjusting rod 8 works through the threaded opening 7, said rod being pro vided at one end with a preferably milled knob or linger piece 9 which is adapted to bear against the outer end of a door engaging member 10. This door engaging member is formed at one end with an opening 11 through which the threaded actuating rod 8 freely moves, and is formed at its opposite end with a disk-like head 12, which is preferably flat and smooth so that it will not mar or in any wise injure the door surface against which it is intended to be placed. The door engaging member is further formed with a longitudinal slot 13, through which the latch rod 5 extends outwardly in a lateral direction.
From as much of the description as has preceded in connection with the correlated views of the accompanying drawing, it will be understood that in the practical application of the device, the lug 2 of the casing engaging member 1 is inserted in the lat-ch strike or keeper of the door-frame with the curved end 4 projecting inwardly. The door is then closed and the other main part of the device is then placed in position with the head 12 against the inner face of the door and with the relatively free extremity of the latch rod 5 inserted in the most convenlienty aperture 3. The finger knob 9 is then not limited to that form or embodiment of' the invention illustrated in Fig. l, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportions of the parts Without. departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
For example, if desired, I may dispense With the tubular door engaging member l0 and use in lieu thereof, a door engaging member l()a in the form of a button having a tlatsurface to engage the door and having a universal joint connection With one end of the actuating rod Sa, the latter, in the present instance, being formed with a substantially spherical head and the door engaging member with a correspondingly shaped socket l5, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, or if desired, instead of the door engaging member 10 or 10, I may use a door engaging member such as that designated l()b and illustrated in Fig. 5, the same being in the form of an arched bar With ends 16 designed to engage the door surface and With an apertured cross bar 17, in Which the threaded actuating screw 8 Works.
It Will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple and eficient door securing device ivhich may be easily and cheaply manufactured, which will take up very little space, and consequently, capable of being carried around in a traveling grip or in ones pocket and Which may be quickly applied to securely hold a door in closed position and locked on the inside of a room, whereby the occupant of the room may feel secure as against intrusion.
I'Vhat I claim is:-
1. A door securer comprising a casing engaging member formed intermediate its ends With a plurality of openings, a hollow cylindrical door engaging member formed With a cylindrical opening in one end and closed at the other end, said door engaging member being free from engagement With the casing engaging member, a threaded actuating rod extending longitudinally Within said door engaging member and being projected beyond the open end of the same, and a latch rod enlarged at one end and provided With a threaded opening through which said actuating rod Works, said door engaging meniber being longitudinally slotted to permit of the movement of the latch rod Within the same.
2. A door securer, including a casing vengaging member provided With a laterally projecting lug andformed intermediate of its ends With a plurality of apertures eX- tending therethrough, a longitudinally slotted door engaging member, a threaded actuated rod extending longitudinally Within said door engaging member and being projected beyond one end of the same, and a latch red insertible Within any of the apertures in said casing engaging member and provided at one end With a threaded opening through which said actuated rod Works, said latch rod being longitudinally movable along the slot formed in the door engaging mem er. v
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of tivo witnesses.
