UNITED STATES JULIUS E. MINOR, OF GARDEN CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA.
DOOB-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PATENT OFFICE.
` Patented May 2, 1911.
Application fi1ed April 11, 1910. Serial No. 554,795.
in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door fasteners of that general class designed for holding closed the doors of barns, warehouses and the like, and permitting the doors to be opened from either the inside or outside.
The object of this invention is to provide a strong, simple and durable device of this character which may be manufactured at a minimum cost and which will have novel means for mounting the device on door casings of various thicknesses.
The novelty of this invention resides in forming one of the grips of the device with a portion adapted to be advanced against the rose or washer of the device whereby to advance the rose into engagement with the door casing as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing forming 'part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hmged door and door casing with my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sec.-
tional view through a door casing of less thickness than that shown in Fig. l, and showing a portion of one of the grips displaced from its normal position and maintaining the rose in engagement with the casing.
The reference character 10 denotes a door hingedly connected at one of its longitudinal.
edges to a door casing 11, this casing having its top, bottom and side rails formed of solid timbers as is usual in barn, warehouse and similar doors.
The fastener comprising the subject matter of this invention consists of a shank 12 formed of round material bent adjacent one end to form an elliptical eye 13 the terminal.
14 of which is carried within the eye and terminates in a fiat face 15 approximately in alinement with the outer face of the shank 12. The free end of the shank 12 is I uniformly reduced to form` an abutment or ledge 16, the purpose of which will presently appear, and this reduced portion is provided with external screw threads 17 which engage the internal threads of a nut 18.
A rose 19 preferably formed from an ordinary washer is fitted on the shank 12 and is adapted to be advanced against the side of the door by the terminal 14 of the elliptical eye as will presently be described.
An eye 20 formed from a single length of round material is provided with a straight flattened portion 21 diametrically opposite the meeting of its terminals, this straight poi-tion being provided centrally with ,v an .opening suflicient in size to snugly fit the reduced extremity of the shank 12. The inner face of the straight portion 21 bears against the Outer side of the door casing, and the outer face of the straight portion bears against the working face of the nut 18 which latter when advanced to final position holds the straight portion of the eye tightly against the ledge 16 and prevents the independent rotation of the eye.
In assembling the device, the shank 12 is inserted through a suitable opening in the door casing and advanced therethrough until The eye 20 is now mounted on the reduced extremity of the shank and advanced thereon until in engagement with the ledge 16, when the retaining nut is advanced into engagement with the outer face of the straight portion of the eye.
Should the device when mounted have too much play owing to the thinness of the door casing side rail, the extremity 14 of the elliptical eye 13 may be advanced by a few sharp blows of a hammer or maul into engagement with the rose and the roseadvanced along the shank 12 until snugly engaged against the side rail. The extremity 14 bearing against the rose will prevent the accidental retraction of the latter along the shank 12 so that the device is maintained snugly in position on the side rail and rattling of the parts prevented.
y From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. it is thought the construction and operation of my device will be easily understood without Va more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes in the form,
the -rose 19 bears againstthe door casing. k
proportion and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A door fastener comprising a rose, a shank engagedk through the rose, and having one extremity looped upon itself and formlng a grip, the extreme end of the looped portion being bent nearly into engagement with the shank and being movable outwardly therefrom into engagement With the rose to maintain the rose in snug engagement With the door jamb, said extremity in all its adjusted positions underlying and being spaced from the shank Whereby the latter at all times presents an unobstrueted and comfortable grip, and a grip disposed upon the opposite end of said shank.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two Wtnesses.
