Be it known that Svnn'r B. Nilsen, t a citizen of the United States, residing at.l Warroad, in the county of Roseau and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to proi vide an improved hinge especially designed as an improvement on that class of hinges l disclosed and claimed in my prior `United States Patent No, 085.218, issued to me ot date October 22, 1901, entitled Hinge To the above cn`d, thc invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of de l l l l l vices hereinafter described and delined in i the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the aceomi panying drawings, wherein like cluracters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings-vfFigure 1 is an end elevation of the improved hinge. secured in working position to a portion ot a door and door casing. shown in transverse section. taken on the line .r :rl o'l' Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a front elevation uot' the parts shown in Fig. 1: and Fig. El 'is a transverse section taken on the line :n3 a' of Fig. 2.

As shown, the hinge leaf 4 is further secured to the door 1 by means ot' a multiplicity of Wood screws 10 passed through holes formed in the hinge leaf 4.
At its inher edge, the hinge leaf 5 termi nates in a pair of hinge knuckles 1 1 that embrace the hinge knuckles Tand are alined therewith. A pintle 12 is passed through the alined hinge knuckles 7 and 11 and coni nects the leaves 4 and 5 for hinge-like movement. The pintle 12 is also adjustably secured to one of the hinge knuckles 11 and held against rotation with respect thereto, by means of a pin or lug 13 on the pintle 12 and is arranged to be seated in any one of a multiplicity of not-ches 14 formed in the hinge knuckles 1l. pintle 12, between the hinge knuckles 7, is a ispiral torsional spring 15. -This spring is anchored at one end to a disk 16 rigidly secured on the pintle 12, and. at its other end. is anchored to one of the hinge knuckles 7. As is evident. the tension of the spring 15 may be varied by adjusting the pintle l2 with respect to the hinge knuckle 11 to which 1t. is connta'ted by the pin 13 and notches 14.

Each end ot the hase section 1S terminates in an out turned hinge knuckle 20. These hinge knuckles 2O cmlu'are the hinge knuckles li' and are pivotv ally secured thereto by means of rivets 21.
The outer edge portion ot the hinge leaf 5 terminates in a curved outer portion 22 that is concentric to the rivets 2l and its under 1 l'ace portion works in close. engagement with the outer face of the hase section 1S. as best shown in Fig. 3. Formed in the base plate 1S. is a pair ot' elongated slots 23 that are alined with the rivets 2l, as shown in Fig. 2. Intcrsecting the elongated slots 23, is a pair of segmental slots 24 formed inthe curved outer portion 22 of the hinge leaf vPassed through the pairs of slots 23 and 24,- at their points ot intersection` is a pair of wood screws 25 that have screw threaded engagement with the door casing 2.
To apply the improved hingevin working position` the hinge leat' 4 is first secured, by thc wood screws l0, to the door l. Next, the supplemental hase section 18 is pressed into flat engagement with the door casing .2 and then forced toward the door 1 as far an the hinge leaf 5 will permit. In this position, the sup lemental base section 18 is secured to the dhor casing 2 by means of the Telescoped onto theA wood screws 19. `After the supplemental `base section 18 is rigidly secured in position, the-wood screws 25 are passed through portions 22, of the hinge leaf o, said -curved outer portion 22 is frictionally clamped onto the upper face of the supplemental base sec tionv 18, and thereby rigidly held against pivotal movement on the rivets 21. The seg- Y g mental slots 24 are arranged so as to extend transversely of the direction of movement ofthe hinge leaf A with respect to the supplemental base section 18 and the screws 25 passed therethrough securely hold the hingel l leaf 5 from working loose during the opening. and closing movement of the door 1. As is evident, if desired, the improved hinge may be secured in working position.in a
reverse order from that shown'in the drawings. It is also evident that the improved hinge may be constructed from cast metal instead of pressed metal as shown in the accompanying drawings.
The above described hinge, while extremely simple and of comparatively small cost to manufacture, is thought to be highly efiicient for the purpose had in view. l i
What I claim is p 1'. A hinge comprising a pair of pivotally connected leaves, one of which is secured to a support by laterally off-setpivotally connected knuckles and providedA with a curved portion concentric to the pivotal connection of said knuckles, and means, for secur ing said curvedl portion with respect 'to said support, substantially as described.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of pivotally connected leaves, one of which is' secured to a support by laterally offset pivotally connected knuckles and provided with a curved portion concentric to the pivotal connection of said knuckles, a segmental slot formed in said. curved portion, and
anchoring` means passed through said slot and secured to said support, substantially as described.
Qi. A hinge comprising a pair of pivotally connected. leaves, one of which is provided with an adjustable supplemental base section, and common means for rigidly securing said supplemental base section and `the hinge leaf to which it is connected to a common support.

A hinge comprising a pair of pivotally connected leaves ofi-set with respect to each other, one of said leaves having an adjustable supplemental base section connected thereto by pivot-ally connected olf-set hinge knuckles, and a curved outer portion concentrically located with respect to the pivotal connection of said hinge knuckles and working over said base section, said base section and curved outer portion of said hinge leaf having intersecting slots, and anchoring means insertible' through said intersecting slots and into a suitable support for securing said base section and connected hinge leaf with respect to each other4 and to said support, substantially as described.
A hinge comprising a pair of pivotallyv connected leaves olf-set with respect to each other, one of said leaves 'having an adjust-A able lsupplemental base section connected thereto by pivotally connected oH-set hinge knuckles, and a curved outer portion concentrically located with respect to the piv-- otal connection of said hinge knuckles and working over said base section, said base section having an elongated slot alined with the pivotal connection of its hinge knuckles, and a segmental slot in the curved outer portion of said hinge leaf and intersecting said velongated slot, and anchoring means insertible through said intersecting slots and into a suitable support for securing said base section and connected leaf hinge with respect to each other and to said support, substantially as described.
6. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves stamped from sheet metal, one of said leaves lbeing provided with' a lateral extension terminating in hinge lugs to which the other of said leaves is pivotally secured, a brace arm partly cut. and pressed from said lateral extension and the connected hinge leaf,`
and common anchoring means for securing the free end of said brace arm to'the connected hinge leaf and to a support, substan-4 tially as described.
