it known that We, Cuantas P. ELLIS and Mannion P. ODoNoHon, citizens of the United States, andiresidents of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and im roved Ges-Stove Attachment, of which the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention lrelates enerally to attachments for gas stoves and more` particularly it involves a. device `adapted to coperate with the gas cocks in order to prevent accldental turning of the same, thereby preventing the escapeof gas save when so desired.
iEhe objectof our invention is to provide anewand useful attachment for gas ranges or stoves inorder to prevent the handles of vthecoclts thereon being turned, the said means being movable to an inoperative position in order to permit the handles to be op-` erated when it 1s desired to supply gas to the range' or stove. j
riihe j invention contemplates a pivoted membermounted adjacent thehandles of theI gas cocks, the said member being providedI with means whereby it may be moved into inoperative position, co-acting means being provided to ermit 1t to return to operative position and e secured in such positlon.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings2 forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in whichj l Figure 1 is a lan view of our devicein inoperative relation with the vgas cocks; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the means for controlling the movement of the same; Fig. 3 is an end view, partly in section, showing the relation of the parts set forth in Fig. 2; 4 is asectional View, on the line --li'of Fig. 2. handles et, 5, thereby permitting the same to be turned, the other position being in a vertical plane or substantially at 90 of the position shown in Fig. 1, and closely adjacent the handles thereby preventing them .from beinfr turned, as particularly shown in Fig. 4. This member 8 is secured in position in either plane in the following way; any suitable box 12 or equivalent compartment is positioned closely adjacent one end oit the member 8, the pintle on which this member is mounted extending into the box and being rigidly connected to a short arm 13, this arm bemg in turn ivoted at 14 to a push rod 15 extending wit iout the box through a suitable opening, the rod having a button or handle 16 at its outer end. The rod 15 is provided with a plurality of projections or teeth 17, 18z either of which is adapted to en- 0rage the side wall of the openingin the hex l12 through which the rod extends in order toholdthe rod and the member 8 in either position, as above set forth. [is shown particularlyl in Fig. 3, the push rod has been moved into the box 12 as far as it will go, thereby bringing the tooth or projection 1T into engagement with the wall ost the opening` as before stated; the rod tends to return to position with the member 8 closely adjacent the handles of the valves by means of a helical spring 19, carried by the end o1c the pintle on which the member is mounted, one end of this spring being in engagement with the short arm 13. The teeth or projections 17, 18, in the ush rod 15 are retained in engagement witi the side wall of the opening in the box 12 by means of a suitable leaf spring20 preferably on the interior ot the box4 12 as shown particularly in Fig. 3.

In combination with the gas cocks of a. stove or range a member movably supported adjacent the said cocks and adapt/ed to contact therewith or be moved remote therefrom, 4a compartment into which one endv of the movable member extends, resilient means within the compartment engaging 'the said end of the movable member whereby it is retained in enga ement with the handles, means engaging trlrie said end whereby the movable member may be moved away from the handles and retained in such position, and other means adapted for engagement with the said means in order to release it, whereby the movable member may come ba'ek into position in contact with the handles.

In combination with the gas cocks of a stove or range, a member pivotally supported adjacent the handles thereof, an arm on the end of the said member, a rod in engagement with the arm for moving it, a fixed element adjacent therod and a, tooth in the rod adapted to engage the fixed element to hold the said member. away from the handleswhen moved to such positlon.
10. ln combination with the gas cocks of a stove or range, a member plvotally supported adjacent the handle thereof, an arm on the end of the said member, a rod in engagement with the arm, a fixed element adjacent the rod, the rod being provided with a number of teeth, each of the teeth being adapted for engagement with the said element, whereby the said member may be retained in position in contact with the handles or removed therefrom.

In combination With the gas cocks of a 'stove or range, a 4member pivotally supported adjacent the handles thereof, a rod engaging the said member for moving it, a fixed element adjacent the rod, the rod being provided with a tooth adapted for engage- 'ment withthe element to hold the said memlber remote from the handles, and other means for engagement with the rod to free the tooth thereon of engagement with the said element whereby the said member may return to normal position adjacent the handles.
l2. ln combination with the as cocks of a stove or range, a member pivotally suported adjacent the handles thereof, means or moving the member remote from the handles in order to permit turning of them, a movable member having projections thereon, a fixed element with which one of the projections. engages for holding the first meansin said position, a spring, and means adapted for engagement with the first means in order to 'permit the spring to return the said member into engagement with the said handles .in order to prevent turning thereof, with the other of the said projections engaging the said fixed element.
