T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, EARL G. WATROUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to what are known as slow closing or flushing valves for water closets and the object thereof is to provide a simple, eflicient and reliable valve of this character.
In the drawngs, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a flushing valve embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 a sectional elevation on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 a sectional elevation of a modified form of construction as regards the manipulative means for operating the valve.
Referring to the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the valve casing is formed in two parts or sections," an upper section 1 and a lower section 2 which are secured together at meeting marginal flanges in suitable manner as by means of the screws 3, these two sections clamping between them at such flanges a flexible diaphragm 4 of suitable material. The casing is provided with an inlet pipe connection 5 and an outlet pipe connection 6. The interior of the lower section 2 of the casing is provided with a centrally arranged casing 7 which forms a discharge chamber 8 open at all times to the discharge connection 6. Within this chamber is arranged the main or controlling valve which controls the supply of the flushing water through the valve mechanism and to the water closet This main valve comprises the flexible diaphragm 4 together with a disk 9 and a sleeve 10, the latter passing through such disk and diaphragm and being secured to a follower plate 11 by screwing into a centrally screw-threaded socket thereof. Ev

The sleeve 10 is provided intermediate its length with a marginal flange 1O bearing against the under side of the disk 9 whereby the latter is held clamped in position onto the under side of the diaphragm. The purpose of this arrangement is to permit of the free passage or escape of water to and from the space above such tube and thereby prevent the uum.
The inlet chamber 13 below the diaphragm is .in constant communication with the chamber 14 above the diaphragm by means of the bypass 15 which is regulated bymeans of the regulating valve 16 of the usual form with the result that the rate of flow of water through such by-pass can be regulated.
The manipulative means for operating the relief valve may be a foot and hand control" combined as shown in Fig. 1, or a hand control, as shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the form of control shown in Fig. 1 the pedal lever 17 is pivoted to the top section of the casing on the pin 18 and is held to normal position by means of the spring 19 coiled around the two stop members 20 and 21 projecting from the lever and casing respectively, and adapted to limit the downward. or operative movement of such lever. When the pressure on the lever 17 is removed the valve 25 will be closed and the water under pressure will pass through the by-pass 15 and into the chamber 14 whereupon the dia phragm will be moved downwardly at a slow rate determined 'by the rate of flow through such by-pass. The water in the chamber 13;,will flow into the discharge chamber as .soon as the flange 1O has been lowered below the top opening thereof and the water will thereupon pass through such discharge chamber and through the discharge connection. When the diaphragm reaches its lowermost position the communication between chambers 13 and Swill be closed by the disk 9 and also by the diaphragm itself pressing upon the top edge of the controlling chamber. 7
Referring to the hand control shown in Fig. 4, the same comprisesa handle 32 to whose lower end is secured by screwing thereonto a collar 33 having an outer marginal flange 33*. This flange fits within the upper end of a casing 34 which is secured to the top of the upper section 1' of the main casing corresponding to the sectionrl of the other form of construction. This flange and consequently the handle is retained within the casing by reason of the inturned end flange 34% Within this casing 34 is arranged a disk 35 which is spring-pressed upwardly or outwardly by means of a coiled spring 36. This disk is secured to a valve stem 37 which extends downwardly through the stuffing box 38 and is provided at its lower end with a head 39 constituting a valve adapted to govern the port 40 which leads from the chamber 14 to the passage 24. A right spring 41 is interposed between the disk 35 and the inner end of the handle 32 in order to maintain such handle in its normal raised position shown. l/Vhen this handle is tilted to one side the depressed side of the flange 33 will contact the disk 35, ford. ing the latter downwardly against the'tension of the spring 36 and opening the relief valve 39 with the same result as the opening 01": the valve 2'7 in the otherform of construction. In a flushing valve, the combination of a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a diaphragm making constant division of the casing into a water-flow section and a control chamber, said casing having two bypasses through its wall from the control chamber respectively to the outlet portion and to the inlet portion of the water-flow section and also having internal walls dividing the water-flow section into inlet and outlet portions, one of them including a central chamber relatively deep along a line perpendicular to the diaphragm and havmg diaphragm extending through said opening into the central chamber and having two axially spaced valving portions either of which may control said opening accordingly as the diaphragm moves, and a guide member fixed within saidcentral chamber and penetrating said valve."
3. In a flushing valve, the combination of a casing having water inlet and outlet openings, a diaphragm making constant division of the casing into a water-flow section and a control chamber, said casing having two by-passes through its wall from the control chamber respectively to the outlet portion and to the inlet portion of the waterflow section and also having internal walls dividing the water-flow section into inlet and outlet portions, one of them includinga central chamber relatively deep along a line perpendicular to the diaphragm and having an opening toward the diaphragm for efifecting communication between the inlet and outlet portions, a manual valve for the firstmentioned by-pass, a valve carried by said diaphragm having an axially recessed stem extending into said central chamber, and a rod fixed in said central chamber upon which said stem is mounted to slide.
4. In a flushing valve, the combination of a main casing, a diaphragm dividing the casing into a pressure chamber and a controlling chamber, means for bypassing water under pressure from the pressure chamber to the controlling chamber, means for releasing water under pressure from the latter chamber, an interior casing situated substantially centrally of the pressure chamber and having an inlet opening communicating with the pressure chamber and having an outlet opening, and a slow closing valve mechanism secured to the diaphragm and operable in the interior casing to govern its inlet opening, said valve mechanism comprising a disk normally closing said inlet opening, a sleeve in such interior casing and mounted upon the diaphragm, and a rod within the latter casing on which the sleeve is mounted to slide.
5. In a flushing valve, the combination of a main casing, a diaphragm dividing the easing into a pressure chamber and a controlling chamber, means for lay-passing water under pressure from the pressure chamber to the controlling chamber, means for releasing water under pressure from the latter chamber, an interior casing situated substantially centrally of the pressure chamber and having an inlet opening communicating with r the pressure chamber and having an outlet opening, and a slow closing valve mechanism secured to the diaphragm and operable in the interior casing to govern its inlet opening, said valve mechanism comprising a disk normally closing said inlet opening, a sleeve in such interior casing and secured to and clamping the disk to the diaphragm, and a fixed rod within the latter casing on which the sleeve is mounted to slide, said sleeve" having a fiange' for closing the inlet opening when the valve is operated. i
6. In a flushing valve, the combination of a main casing, a diaphragm dividing the casing into a pressure chamber and a controlling chamber, means for by-passing water under pressure from the pressure chamber to the controlling chamber, means for releasing water under pressure from the latter chamber, an interior casing situated substantially centrally of the pressure chamber and having an inlet opening communicating with the pressure chamber and having an outlet opening, and a slow closing valve mechanism secured to the diaphragm and operable in the interior casing to govern its inlet opening, said valve mechanism comprising a disk normally closing said inlet opening, a sleeve in such interior casing and clamping the disk to the diaphragm, and a rod within the latter casing on which the sleeve is mounted to slide, said rod having a relief passage communicating with the interior casing and the inner end of such sleeve.

In a flushing valve, the combination of a main casing, a diaphragm dividing the casing into a pressure chamber and a controlling chamber, means for by-passing water under pressure from the pressure chamber to the controlling chamber, means for releasing water under pressure from the latter chamber, an interior casing situated substantially centrally of the pressure chamber and having an inlet opening communicating with the pressure chamber and having an outlet opening, and a slow closing.
