TIME-CONTROL MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application filed August 6, 1915. Serial No. 43,987.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT T. GARRETT, citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TimeControl Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a time control mechanism for operating heater and range dampers, gas-cocks, switches and the like and the same consists of a pivotally supported tube having movable means therein and operated at any predetermined time by the arbor or similar device of a time-piece or other means to change the position of said tube through gravitation and thereby to either close or open the said damper or to operate a gas-cock to light or extinguish the gas; and in such connection my invention has relation to the general constructive arrangement of such a mechanism having movable means shiftable therein, and which when changing position is adapted to operate means affected thereby, such as above defined, among other uses for the said mechanism.
My invention stated in general terms, consists of a time control mechanism of the character defined and constructively arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- Figure l, is a front elevational View of so much of a time control mechanism, as embodies the essential main features of the said invention and also showing adjustable means for moving the tube into a set position in connection with means to be operated upon thereby. Fig. 2, is a side view partly in elevation and in section, showing the mechanical device of my invention in a normally set position. Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the position of the movable means thereof, after the spring controlled trigger of the same has been operated upon by the arbor or the like of the time controller; and Fig. 4, is an elevation view of a slightly modified form of the mechanical device of the mechanism of Fig. 1, showing the rod of the said device adapted to engage thereby.
Referring to the drawings a, is the arbor or the like of a time piece adapted at pre determined periods to actuate thereby the said arbor.
b, is a tube adapted to be pivotally supported and having one or more balls 5 mounted therein. This tube 6, is provided in one portion with an opening 6 for permitting a spring controlled trigger 6 to enter the said tube and thereby to hold the balls in a set position, as shown in Fig. 2. The trigger L is provided with a cross-arm 0 to be engaged by the time-piece arbor a, and the spring controlled trigger is pivoted at Z2 to the tube 6, for example in the manner, as clearly shown in'Fig, 2. From the right side of the tube b, projects as clearly shown in Fig. 2, a sleeve 7), carrying a drop latch 6 for engaging a toothed wheel 6 rigidly mounted on a rod 6 This rod is adapted to enter the said sleeve and to be locked in a set position to the said sleeve by the said latch b and wheel 5 The said rod 5 is adapted to be connected with or to form a part of the damper of a range or heater, not shown.
In Fig. 4:, instead of providing a sleeve 6, as in Figs. 1 and 2, projecting from the tube Z), a rod 6 is employed and which is directly secured to the said tube 2'), as clearly shown therein, and which may form the valvespindle of a gas-cock, not shown, for either lighting or extinguishing gas issuing through the burner of the said cock.
In the operation of the mechanism herein-before explained, the actuation of the arbor a, by the time-piece or the like, rotatively operates the cross-arm If, to actuate the spring controlled trigger 6 for releasing the balls 6, from their set position in the tube 5, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and thus to drop in the said tube to the position, as shown in Fig. 3, and at the same time in the travel of the said balls in a downward course in the said tube Z), by gravitation the said tube has thereby shifted its position from that as shown in Fig. 2, to that as shown in Fig. 3, and either the sleeve Z) or the rod 6", has been operated thereby together with the means affected thereby to change the condition thereof, that is, of the damper to close or open or if a gas-cock, the gas to be either lighted at the burner end or the flame extinguished at the burner. To reset the mechameans to be operated upon nism, as arranged in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it is only necessary to release the drop-latch b, from its engagement between teeth of the wheel 72 to allow of the turning or shifting of the tube 6, so as to bring the balls 6 again into their normally set position, being that as clearly shown in Fig. 2, for the subsequent operation of the spring controlled trigger N, by the time-piece arbor a, to cause the said tube 1), to change to the position as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 4, the rod 5 being directly connected with the tube Z), and in turn with the means afiected thereby, any movement of the said tube 6, will actuate the said rod 6 to change the condition of the article with which connected. In this instance, the adjustable locking-means as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, are dispensed with, as will be observed.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, comprising an operated arbor, a tube having movable means therein adapted to change the position of said tube, said tube having a spring controlled trigger arranged to enter the same, a cross-arm connected with said trigger and adapted to normally engage said arbor and actuated thereby and said tube provided with a stem, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the character described, comprising an operated arbor, a pivotally supported tube having movable means mounted therein adapted to change the position of said tube, a spring controlled trigger arranged to enter said tube, a cross-arm connected with said trigger and normally engaging said arbor, a sleeve carrying a drop-latch, a stem fitting said sleeve, :1 toothed-wheelmounted on said stem and arranged so that said drop-latch may be caused to engage between the teeth of said wheel, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT T. GARRETT.
