SAFETY GAS-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,091, dated April 10, 1894. Application filed June 26, 1893. Serial Ito-478,891. (No model-) i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. OINI, a sub ect of the King of Italy, and GUSTAV l\ IA IWALD, a citizen of the United States, re- Sldlllg in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Safety Gas-Cocks; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

Our invention relates to ment for gas burners. I
It consists of asupplemental, automatically operating out off agd mechanism incidental thereto, which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side viewof the burner showing our attachment. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view with the lever removed, showing the pawls and ratchet. Fig. 3 is a section showing the cock. Fig. 4, is a view of the cock 0 removed.
The object of our invention is to provide an automatically operating safety cock by which the flow of-gas will be cut ofI, if the main cock he accidentally opened after the gas has been extinguished, or if the flame should be in any way extinguished. I

for the flow of gas. Upon the opposite end is a weight H which is sufficient to return the valve to the position which closes it against the flow of gas, or, if preferred, a spring may be substituted for'the weight;
I is a pawl fulcrumed as shown upon the side of the burner above the ratchet on the end of the cock, and its point is adapted to engage with the notch E of the ratchet, whenever the lever F has been turned so as to bring the gas passages of the cock into line to allow the gas to flow through it. When nected with its upper end a yoke, the transj verse bar J of which extends horizontally across above the burner tip, so that when the gas is ignited, this transverse bar will be heated. The vertical portion, of the yoke J on the opposite side from the lever J, is fixed by set screw or otherwise as shown at K. It will be seen that by reason of this fixed portion J an expansion of thetransverse bar.
J will act to move the upper end of the lever J outwardly. To the lower 'end of the lever J is fixed a pawl L, and this pawl is adapted to engage the notch D of the ratchet when ever by the expansion of the bar J, the lever has been sufficiently moved to force the pawl L forward sufficiently to cause it to engage with the notch D. Above the pawl L is a horizontal bar M, also fixed to the lever J, and the projecting end of this arm approaches closely to the pawl I, as shown, so that whenever the lever J is moved by the expansion of the part J, it forces pawl L and the arm M respectively toward the ratchet and the pawl I, and as the pawl L arrives at the point where it will engage with the notch D of the ratchet,
the arm M will have pressed the pawl I out of engagement with the notch E.

A The notches E and D are so situated with relation to each other, that when the pawl I has been disengaged from the notch E, the ratchet will turn a little distance before the notch D engages with the pawl L. The object of this is to cause the pawl I to drop upon the outside of the ratchet and beyond the notch E, in case of any contraction or moving of the lever which would retract the arm M so that it will not be possible for the ratchet pawl I to fall into the notch E after it has once been disengaged therefrom. The parts will now remain in this position, the'cock C will remain open, being so r'etainedby the pawl L which engages the notch D of the ratchet as long as the gas is burning, and the bar J remains expanded.

the cock would not be necessary, but in case of accident, either the accidental extinguishing of the gas without closing the main cock, 0! the partial opening of the main cock after it hasbeen shut off, so that the gas would still be allowed to flow, this supplemental cock will act by the contraction of the cross bar J, and will close the supplemental cock, thus preventing any further flow of gas.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas burner, the combination of a supplemental cock having notches on its opposite sides, a lever and attachment for operating the cook, a pawl adapted to engage one of said notches to retain the cock in an open position, a lever fulcrumed near the upper end of the burner havingits lower end formed or provided with a pawl to engage the other notch, having its upper portion extended across the burner tip to form an expansible bar, and thence turned downwardly on the side of the burner opposite the main portion of the lever, and having its end fixedly secured whereby as the transverse bar expands under the influence of the heat the lever swings about its fulcrum and the pawl end is made to engage its notch, said lever being provided with means adapted to engage and release the retaining pawl from its notch, substantially as herein described.
2. In a gas burner, acock having a weighted or spring-actuated lever fixed upon its outer end and an attachment whereby said lever is moved so as to open the cock for the passage of gas, a pawl adapted to engage. a notch in opposite side of the ratchet from the first named pawl, a yoke connected with the upper end of the lever having the side opposite to I the lever rigidly fixed to the gas burner, and the transverse bar of the yoke extending above the burner whereby its expansion acts to move the lever about its fulcrum and causes the second pawl to engage the notch of the ratchet, and an arm M projecting from the lever and acting to disengage the first named pawl at the instant when the second pawl has engaged the ratchet, substantially as herein described. I
. 3- In a gas burner, the rotary gas cook, a weighted lever with connection by which it is actuated to open the cook, a pawl I engaging a notch upon one side of the ratchet disk to retain the valve in its open position, a lever fulcrumed upon theopposite side of the burner connected with an expansion arm passing through the gas flame whereby the upper end of the lever is moved outward by the expansion of the arm, an arm projecting from the lower end of the lever adapted to disengage the pawl I when the lever is moved by expansion and a pawl L connected with the lever and movable therewith so as to engage a notch in the ratchet upon the opposite side from the pawl I, said notch being so placed with relation to the notch of the first named pawl that the ratchet will be allowed to turn a little distance after the pawl I is disengaged before the pawl L becomes engaged whereby the pawl I is prevented from again entering its notch, substantially as herein described.
