Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. BLODGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing in South Lincoln, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Gas-Stoves, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a gas stove and has for its object to provide the same with a safety device or attachment, for automatically shutting oif the supply of gas to the stove, in case the gas should cease to burn.
In accordance with this invention, the inlet pipe for the burner of the stove has connected with it a fitting having a valve with which cooperates a device for automatically moving the valve into its closed position when the gas ceases to burn, said device being controlled in its operation by a thermo stat, as will be described.
These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas stove embodying this invention. Fig. 2, a plan view of the base of the stove shown in Fig. 1, the oven being omitted. Figs. 8 and 4, details to be referred to, and Fig. 5, a detail in plan to be referred to.
The gas stove herein shown as embodying this invention comprises a substantially rectangular base a open at its top and provided with legs Z), a gas burner located below the said top and comprising as herein shown a hollow casting 0 having a plurality of radially extended arms al and an enlarged gas inlet pipe 7, the latter being made of a length suflicient to extend to one of the sides of the base a, the said burner also having an arm g, which is secured by a bolt h to the rear side of the base a. The hollow casting c and its radial arm d are provided with perforations i forming gas outlets, which are located sub stantially central with relation to the base a. The gas inlet pipe f is also preferably provided with a plurality of gas outlets extended longitudinally of said pipe for a purpose as will be described.
The stove herein shown is provided with an oven 70, which rests upon the base a. The gas inlet pipe f for the burner has communicating with it the outlet pipe 6 of a valve fitting 7 provided with a gas inlet pipe 8, which latter is suitably connected with the gas main which may be represented by the pipe 9. In the present instance the pipe 6 is secured to a support 10, which cooperates with the mouth of the burner inlet pipe and is secured as by a bolt 11 to the front side of the base a, said support being made in the form of a cap which is provided with suitable openings for the passage of air through it and into the inlet pipe f.
The valve fitting 7 contains a rotatable valve 12 of any suitable construction, having its stem 13 provided as shown with the handle 14. The valve 12 is adapted to be opened by turning the handle 14:, and to be closed by a spring 15 coiled about the valve stem and having one end secured as by the screw 16 to the valve fitting (see Figs. 2 and 5) and its other end to a ring, disk or collar 17 loose on the valve stem 13 and provided with a lug or projection 18, which is adapted to engage a finger 19 on the valve stem and extended into the path of movement of the lug or projection 18. When the handle 14 is turned to open the valve 12, the finger 19 engages the lug or projection 18 and rotates the disk or collar 17 with the valve, thereby winding up the spring 15, which is held from moving the disk or ring 17 and the valve 12 backward, by a detent comprising a bar or strip 20 provided with two fingers 21, 22 (see Fig. arranged out of line with each other, for a purpose as will be described. The detent bar or strip 20 is riveted or otherwise secured to a spring strip 23, which is fastened to a collar 2 -1 fast on the outlet pipe 6 of the valve fitting, the free end of the spring strip 23 being bent and secured to one end of a longitudinally movable rod 25, which is extended through a second collar 26 on the outlet pipe 6 and also through the collar 2& and the side of the base a and through an opening in the burner inlet pipe f. The rod 25 is extended upwardly within the base a and its inner end projects above the burner, and said rod is encircled for the greater part of its length by a sleeve 27 of brass, composition or other metal, which responds quickly to heat and cold and forms one member of the thermostat, the rod 25 forming the other. One end of the metal sleeve 27 encircling the rod 25 bears against the stationary collar 24,
while its other end, which is extended above the burner, engages a nut 30 on the upper end of the rod 25, and as a result, the sleeve 27 when heated, expands away from the fixed abutment or collar 24 and its free end bearing against the nut 30 moves the rod 25 longitudinally away from the valve and toward the burner. This movement of the rod 25 causes the spring 28 to be bent or contracted, and the detent strip or bar to be moved so as to remove the detent finger 21 out of engagement with the lug or projection 18 and bring the other detent finger 22 into the path of movement of the lug or projection 18, thereby restraining the spring 15 from moving the disk or collar 17 back into its normal position, until the burner is ex tinguished, whereupon the thermostat contracts and the rod 25 is moved outward or toward the valve 12, thereby expanding the spring 23 and moving the detent strip 20 so as to disengage the finger 22 from the lug or projection 18, which permits the coiled spring 15 to unwind and rotate the disk or collar 17 in the reverse direction. On the reverse movement of the disk or collar 17, the lug 18 thereon engages the finger or projection 19 on the valve stem, and the valveis rotated back into its starting or closed position, thereby automatically cutting 05 the supply of gas to the burner. The backward movement of the valve is limited by a stop pin on the valve stem engaging a shoulder 86 on the valve fitting.
lVhen it is desired to light the burner, the valve handle 14 is turned so as to open the valve, and in this movement of the valve, the finger 19 on the valve stem engages the lug 18 on the disk or collar 17 and moves the same beyond the detent fingers, so that when the handle is released by the operator, the finger 21 is in the path of backward movement of the lug 18 and disk 17 and prevents the latter from being moved by the spring 15 until the burner is lighted and the thermostat expanded so as to disengage the finger 21 from the lug 18 and bring the finger 22 into the path of the lug 18, to be engaged thereby. While the disk or collar 17 is in the position just described, the valve may be turned back so as to partially or wholly close the same, and if the valve is left wide open or only partially open, it will be closed by the lug 18 engaging the finger 19 as soon as the gas ceases to burn, as for instance by being accidentally blown out by a draft or being put out by a fall in pressure of the gas.
I have herein shown one form of gas stove provided with a thermostatic safety attachment, but I do not desire to limit the invention to the particular construction shown. The action of the thermostat is materially hastened by the flame arising from the gas issuing from the outlets j in the burner inlet pipe f.
The detent fingers 21, 22 are out of line with each other, so that the lug or projection 18 may pass by the finger 22 when the valve is opened and engage the finger 21 and force the latter to one side until the lug or projection has passed by it, after which the latter springs back into the path of the lug or projection 18 and arrests the same it the operator releases the handle 14. The longitudinal movement 01 the rod 25 by the sleeve 27 un der the influence of heat, will move the finger 21 out of the path of the lug 18 and bring the finger 22 into said path, thereby holding the lug 18 and its disk or collar 17 stationary, until the thermostat contracts sufiiciently to disengage the finger 22 from the lug 18, whereupon the spring 15 acts to turn the disk 17 and its lug 18 back to their starting position, the said lug on its return movement engaging the finger 19 on the valve stem and moving the valve into its closed position.
Claims:
1. The combination with a gas stove provided with a burner having gas outlets and a gas inlet pipe provided with gas outlets, of a valve fitting provided with a gas inlet and with a gas outlet pipe, a support for said fitting secured to the gas stove and cooperating with the mouth of the burner inlet pipe, a rotatable valve in said fitting, a device rotatable with said valve in one direction, a spring to rotate said device in the op posite direction, a lug or projection on said device, a detent strip or bar provided with fingers cotiperating with said lug or projection, a longitudinally movable rod connected with said detent strip or bar at one end and having its free end extended above the said burner, a sleeve encircling said rod, a fixed abutment against which one end of the said sleeve bears, and a device on said rod with which the other end of said sleeve cooperates to effect longitudinal movement of said rod in one direction by the expansive movement of said sleeve, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a gas stove provided with a burner having gas outlets and a gas inlet pipe provided with gas outlets, of a valve fitting provided with a gas inlet and with a gas outlet cooperating with the inlet pipe of said burner, a rotatable valve in said fitting, a device rotatable in one direction with said valve and in the opposite direction independently thereof, a spring to rotate said device, a detent to hold said device stationary against the action of said spring, and a thermostat operatively connected with said detent and extended into the heating zone of the burner inlet pipe and said burner, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a gas stove provided with a gas burner, of a valve controlling the supply of gas to said burner, a device rotatable with said valve in one direction, a detent cooperating with said device to hold it stationary while permitting the said valve to be rotated in the opposite direction, a longitudinally movable rod connected with said detent, a sleeve on said rod, an abutment for one end of said sleeve, and a device on said rod with which the other end of said sleeve cooperates to effect movement of said rod, said sleeve being exposed to the heat of the said burner, substantially as described.
