Description

O. GORDON.
DEVICE FOR AUTOMATICALLY CUTTING OFF THE SUPPLY OF GAS TO A BURNER. APPLICATION I'ILEJI) MAR. 7, 1918.
1,079, 122, Patented Nov. 18, 1913.
ed. to depend a slight distance below the burner 16, it being understood that the lever 34 can be either actuated by pushing down on the rod 20 or by pulling on the cord 36. A pilot tube 37 has connection with the valve chamber 11 and extends downwardly and terminates adjacent the burner 16, a valve 38 being carried by the pilot tube 37 for controlling the supply of gas thereto.
When the valve 28 is reposing on the valve seat 29 and thus preventing the gas in the supply pipe 14 from passing into the pipe 15 and thence to the burner, the stem 27 will be in lowermost position and will be held in this position by the expansible action of the spring 30. When it is desired to produce a flame at the burner 16, a downward pull is exerted on the cord 36, it being understood, however, that a downward push on the rod 20 will accomplish the same result, and in consequence thereof the lever 34 will be actuated so that an end of the lever will engage the pin 35 and impart an upward movement to. the stem 27, thus unseating the valve 28 and permitting the gas-to pass through the easing 10, into the pipe 15 and then to the burner 16 where the gas will be ignited by the pilot flame at the lower end of the pilot tube 37 and which receives its supply of gas from the valve chamber 11. When the iiameat the burner 16 has heated the expansion tube 25 sufficiently to cause the same to expand longitudinally and abut against the lower end of the stem 27, the
downward pull on the cord 30 is released and it will thus be seen that the expansion of the rod 25, and by ieans of which the tube engages the stem 27, retains the valve 28 in open position so that a constant supply of gas will pass from the supply pipe 14: to the burner 16. Now if for any reason the pressure in the gas main should be reduced, the [lame at the burner 16 will of course be diminished and as a result thereof, if the pressure is entirely out off, the expansion rod 25 will cool and contract, the spring 30 will move the stem 27 downwardly and move the valve 28 into closed position to cut off the supply of gas to the burner.
From the foregoing description it will. therefore, be apparent that the escape of gas into a room, will be prevented in view .of the fact that whenever all pressure is reduced or cutoff so as to result in the 'eX- tinguishing of the flame at the burner, the valve 28 will'be moved into closed position and cut on the supply of" gas, to the burner, it being further seen, however, that by simply exerting a pull on the cord 36, the gas will again be conveyed to the burner to produce a flame at that point and as long the pressure is not reduced in the gas main the flame at the burner will continue.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing provided with an inlet and an outlet, of a gas supply having connection with the inlet of the casing, a pipe having connection with the outlet, a burner carried by the pipe, a stern mounted to slide in the said casing, a valve carried by the stem to normally close a passage be tween the inlet and the outlet, a bracket supported on the casing, a lever mounted to swing on the bracket, a pin projecting from the stem and adapted to be engaged by the said lever to actuate the stem and unseat the said valve in the said casing, and an expansion rod adjustably supported on the said bracket andprojecting vertically adjacent the said burner to engage the said stem when the said rod is extended. 85
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing provided with a valve chamber and having an inlet and an outlet, with the said casing attached to a gas supply terminating in the said inlet, of a pipe connected to the casing at the outlet thereof and depending below the casing, a burner carried by the pipe, a bracket-supported on the casing, a stem slidable in the said casing and depending exteriorly thereof, a valve carried by the stem and normally closing a passage between the inlet and outlet in the said casing, an expansion rod adjustably supported on the said bracket adjacent the said burner, with the upper end 100 of the expansion rod engaged by the lower end of the said stem, a lever mounted to swing on the said bracket, a pin projecting from the stem and adapted to be engage by the lever when the same is actuated to 105 move the said stem to unseat the said valve, and means for operating the said lever.
3. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a casing provided with a valve chamber and having an inlet and an outlet, with the said casing attached to a gas supply terminating in the said inlet, of a pipe connected to the casing at the outlet thereof and depending below the casing, a burner carried by the pipe, a bracket supported on the casing, a stem slidable in the said casing and depending exteriorly thereof, a valve carried by the stem and normally closing a passage between the inlet and outlet in the said casing, an expansion rod adjustably supported on the said bracket, adjacent the said burner, with the upper end of the expansion rod engaged by the lower end of the said sten1,alevermountcd to swing on the said bracket, a pin projecting from the stem and adapted to be engaged by t e lever when the same is actuated to move the said stem to unseat the said valve, means for operating the said lover, a spring carried in the casing and 1.30
