GAS LlGHTER OR EXTINGUISHER.
EEIEEGEFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '7t7,014, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed November 26,1902. Serial No. 132,975. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT SPARKS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Stewart Lodge, Baldslow Road, Hastings, in the county of Sussex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Lighters or Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gas lighters and extinguishers; and the object of my invention is to provide a mechanical arrangement for raising and lowering a gas-flame at predetermined times.
With this object in view my invention consists in the device as will now be more particularly described in detail and then definitely claimed at the end hereof.
In the accompanying drawings, which represent the preferable embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a gas-burner with my attachment thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, on a larger scale than Fig. 1, of the attachment detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, also on a larger scale than Fig. 1, of the bottom of the boX with the front removed to show the arrangement of the lever.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letters, A designates a pivoted lever shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 2 and to which is secured two arms B B, each of said arms being used to carry overa weight alternately from one side to the other,"as will be hereinafter described.
Ooacting with the arms B B is a Weight 0, supported by an arm 0, pivotally supported in any desirable manner, so that the arm 0 is located between the two arms B and B, heretofore described, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Arranged, preferably, above the lever A and these arms B B is a gas-burner preferably of the usual incandescent character, which burner is provided with an ordinary or any form of tap or cock D. To one end of thistap or cock D is secured two arms E E, which project on opposite sides of the tap D.
The arrangement of the parts so far described is such that whenever the lever A is moved from one side to the other one of its arms B or B contacts with the arm 0 and moves it. Just as soon as this arm passes the perpendicular its attached Weight causes it to fall over to the other side, thus striking on one of the arms E E, the continued movement of the weight causing the arm on which it falls to move, thus moving the tap or cook D and controlling the flow of gas. Thus in Fig. 2 when the arm A is moved to the left its arm B is caused to move against the arm 0 and move said arm and its weight 0 toward the left and away from the arm E, projecting from the tap or cook D. Just as soon as the arm C is moved to the slightest extent past the perpendicular the weight 0 falls by gravity, strikes the arm E, and thus moves it and at the same time operates the tap or cock D.
Any preferred means may be used to operate the lever A; but I have shown in my drawings the form I now prefer, which consists of a disk F, operated by clockwork, shown in conventional form in dotted lines, and tothis disk is secured two pins G and G. One of these pins, G, is arranged to travel so as to move against an arm a, projecting from the lever A, and thus move the lever toward the left looking at Fig. 3. After the lever A has been moved by the pin G so that the lever is thrown over to the opposite position from that shown in Fig. 3 the other pin, G, moves around and against the arm a, projecting from the lever A, and thus moves said lever back to the position shown in Fig. 3. Although I have described the means for operating this lever, it will be understood that myinvention is not limited thereto, but any suitable means may be used for this purpose.
It will be obvious that changes and modifications maybe made without departing from the lines of my invention as set forth in the following claims.
Having now particularly described my inand means for operating said weight to carry of said arms, and means for moving said 10 its center of gravity over the pivot, substan- Weight to carry its center of gravity over its tialiy as described. ivotal point, substantially as described.
2. In apparatus of the character described, Signed by me at Stewart Lodge aforementhe combination of a weight pivoted below tioned this 10th day of October, 1902.

projecting on opposite sides thereof and in' the Witnesses path of said weight, said arms and their cock ERNEST SPARKS,
being movable as the weight falls on either 1 ADELAIDE SPARKS.
