" IGNITING DEVIGE.
rasees?. i
` To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. AURINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rockford, in the county of Eddy and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Igniting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in igniting devices and has particular application to a gas igniting device.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described which may be readily attached to a gas burner and removed therefrom and which when in applied position will be connected up with the controlling.
valve or gas cock in such manner that when the latter is vactuated to open position the igniting device will be operated to ignite the gas issuing from the burner or tip as the case may be. Y
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, etiiciency and durability coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture and marketing and which may be readily and conveniently installed and maintained at a minimum exense.
I/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim. i
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a gas burner equipped with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the abrading member.
-Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a gas burner of any approved or well known construction, while 2 indicates the controlling valve or cut oft cock by means of which the flow of gas to the tip of the burner is regulated and controlled. In the present instance, the stem of the controlling valve 2 is equipped with a cross arm 3 to the. free extremities of which are fastened chains 4 depending from the cross arm and x:terminating in finger rings 5. ly means of this construction, it will be seen that when one Specification of Letters Patent.

Avalve to closed position.

chain 4 is pulled in a downward direction, the cross arm 3 will be swung so as to throw the controlling valve to open position, while when the other chain is moved downwardly, the cross arm will be actuated to move the In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, my imm proved igniting device embodies a spark producing block 6 suitably secured to a band 'i' encircling the tip end of the burner 1, and a lever 8 fulcrumed between its ends upon stud 9 carried by a. band 10 surrounding the burner tube 1 below the band 7, the bands 7 and 1Q being preferably split and each having the confronting ends thereof outturned to form lugs adapted to receive a set screwll whereby the respective band may be clamped upon the tube.
Pivotally connected lto one end of the lever 8. that is, the outer eiid of such lever, is a' link 12 having the lower extremity thereof pivotally connected asl at 14 to one end of the cross arm 3, while formedin the free end of the lever 8, that is, the inner end of the lever, is a diagonal slot 15 in which is seated a spring-like abrading element 16 having the relatively high edge thereof contacting with the spark producing block 6 so that when the abrading element is moved upwardly over the block sparks willA be emitted by the latter, while inthe downward movement of they abrading element such element will idle overthe block and thereby eliminate waste. l
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. In the downward move, ment of the respective chain 4 to open the valve, the link l2 moves downwardly and so swings the lever 8 about the stud 9 thereby elevating the inner end of thelever. As
the inner end of the lever 8 moves upwardly,` the respective edge of the abrading element 16 rides over the spark producing block 6 and so causes the latter to'emit sparks with the elfect to ignite the gas issuing from the burner tube. On the other hand, whenA the other chain 4 is pulled so as to cut of? the supply of gas to the burner, the abraing element 16 idles over the spark producing block 6 in the downward movement of the. t
inner end of the lever 8 under the action of seated within said slot .and disposed at an the link 12, thereby prolonging the life of angle to said block and adapted when moved the s ark producing block. thereover in an upward direction to'cause I c aim: the production of sparks, and when moved 5 The combination with a gas burner, a in the reverse direction, to idlel over the 20 controlling valve therefor, and means for block, and a link connection between said operating said valve, of an igniting device valve operating means and the free end of comprising a spark producing block, consaid lever whereby in the movement of the nectlonsbetween said block and burner, a valve the sparking device will be operated. 10 pivot stud, a connection between said stud In testimon whereof I aiiX my signature 25 and burner, a lever fulcrumed between its in presence o two witnesses.
ends upon said' stud and having one end GEORGE W. AURINGER. thereof terminating adjacent to said spark Witnesses: .producing block and formed with a diagof H. J. MITCHELL,
i5 nal slot, a fiat spring-like abrading element H. L. T. RANLON.
