To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. DALEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gas controlling devices designed for economizing the consumption of gas by regulating the supply to the burner, the particular application of the improvements which constitute the subject matter of this invention being directed to attachments for gas stoves or ranges.
The chief objects arrived at in the improvements hereinafter described are to provide simple efficient and durable mechanism whereby the gas supply to a burner will be automatically lessened by the removal of the utensil from its position above the burner, and conversely to increase the flow of gas to the burner whenever a utensil is placed over the burner.
Other objects are to provide means for such regulating of the gas supply to a burner without interfering with the manual operation of the valve; to furnish means for adjusting the throw of the valve operating lever with the purpose in view of varying the gas supply so that the flame may be correspondingly greater or less as desired.
I accomplish the desired results by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, the details of construction and manner of operating, being disclosed in the following views Figure l is a side elevation of the gas burner of a stove or range, to which my improved automatic gas economizer is applied; Fig. 2 is an end view of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the details of the drawing, 3 represents a gas burner of conventional de sign and construction, which is screwed upon one end of a supporting gas pipe 4: which is supplied with the usual Bunsen attachment 5, and with two gas controlling valves 6 and 7, the former being manually operable, and the latter adapted to be operated automatically by the mechanism which constitutes my invention. I have not shown the by-pass pipe which is a common incident of the class of apparatus of the character to which my improvements be= long, as same forms no part of my invention and is not affected thereby.
Mounted on the pipe 4 near the burner 3, is a collar 8, which is adjustable both longitudinally and circumferentially on said pipe by a set screw 8*. Extending horizontally from one side of the upper portion of the collar 8 is a stud 9 upon which is pivotally mounted a cast iron block 10, which serves both as a counterweight and a coupling or connecting member for parts to be described. This block is provided with several holes l0 so that it may be mounted in different positions on the stud or pivot 9. Rigidly secured to the rear face of the block 10 is a curved arm 11, the connected end of which is bent at right angles as at 11*.
To the rear face of the block 10 is rigidly secured by screws 12 an arm 12 provided with several holes 12 to receive said screws so that the point of connection may be changed if desired. The lower portion of the arm 12 is slotted as at 12 to receive the hooked end of a link 13 which is engaged by a pin 12 which passes transversely through a suitable opening in the lower end of said arm. The forward portion of the link 13 is flattened and formed into a loop which embraces the lower end of the arm let on the valve 7. The loop has several holes extending t-herethrough adapted to interchangeably receive a pin 13 which passes through a suitable opening in the lower end of said arm. The engagement between the link 13, the arm 12 and the arm 14 is such that any rocking movement of the block 10 on its pivot 9 will cause a reciprocating movement of the link 13 and a rocking movement of the valve 7. It will be understood that this valve is of the plug type with ports therethrough which are closed or opened by the turning of the valve in its seat, and that this turning is effected by the rocking of the valve arm 1& which is fixed at one end of the valve 7.
It will be apparent that in the various connections described between the block 10, its pivot 9, the arm 12, the link 13 and the arm 14:, I have provided a wide range of adjustments, so that I am enabled to attach my gas controlling device to stoves of various makes and designs, provided the top on which utensils are placed has a supporting grid consisting of parallel bars, as shown by 15 or their equivalent.
While the engagement between the hooked end of the link 13 and the pin 12 is sufficient to eifect the operations above described, I have provided for disconnecting said parts by applying a little force to removing the hook from the pin, so that if it is desired not to use the automatic control of valve 7, the change can be easily and quickly efl'ected. The depression of the curved bar 11 by the weight of a vessel or utensil placed thereon, will open the valve 7 to the desired extent, and upon the removal of the utensil, the counterweight or block 10 will restore the arm 11 to its normal position and at the same time close or partially close the valve 7, as may be desired, these operations being like those of similar devices which have been invented and patented for the same purpose.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is

on said pipe, a block pivoted on said collar and adapted to act as a counterweight, a curved bar projecting rigidly from said block, an arm connected with said block, and an adjustable connection between said arm and said valve.
2. The combination with a gas-burner and gas-supply pipe therefor having a gas controlling valve therein, of a collar adjustably mounted on said pipe, a block adjustably pivoted on said collar, an arm rigidly con nected withsaid block and extending rear-.
wardly and upwardly therefrom, an arm adjust-ably connected with said block and extending downwardly therefrom, a link detachably connected with said arm and adjustably connected with said valve.
