AUTOMATIC CUT-OFF FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Cut- Off for Gras-Burners, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic cut-offs for gas burners and has for an object to provide a structure in which the supply of gas will be automatically out off to a limited extent, so as to reduce the size of the flame when the burner is not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved cut-off designed to be automatically actuated when an article is removed from the burner, so that the majority of the gas will be shut off, but a suflicient flow left to maintain a small blaze in all of the jets of the burner.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in an automatic cut-ofi' devised for burners, a needle valve structure having a flattened portion on the side, whereby a passageway is provided when the needle valve structure is closed, so as to permit the passage of a predetermined quantity of gas into the burner, for maintaining a small blaze in the jets of the burner.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, a burner structure of substantially any character may be used, which is provided with an air mixer of substantially any type. Arranged adjacent the air mixer is an ordinary valve into which a needle valve is adapted to be projected for closing the same. This needle valve is provided with a flattened place for leaving a certain portion of the discharge opening free, in order to allow a certain quantity of gas to flow,
when a pot, pan or other article is placed;

over the burner structure, the contact member will be depressed and will carry with it the pivotally mounted lever and needle valve structure. In this movement the needle valve structure will be withdrawn or moved to an open position and consequently allow a full flow of gas, provided the ordinary valve arranged adjacent the air mixer is open.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a top plan view of a burner together with an automatic cut-off embodying the invention, a fragmentary portion of a stove and gas supply pipe being shown; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1 on line 22; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through Fig. 2 on line 33.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates an ordinary stove provided with a burner 2, formed in any desired way; the drawings showing a starshaped burner. The burner 2 is connected with a suitable air mixer 3, through which gas is supplied by valve 4 from a supply pipe 5. Valve 4 isprovided with an extension 6, carrying a discharge tip 7 and provided with an enlargement 8 against which the end of the air mixer 3 is forced by bolts 9 and 10. Bolts 9 and 10 extend through suitable cars 11 and 12 on the air mixer 3 and are held properly in place and brought under pro-per tension by suitable nuts 14: and 15. The ends of members 9 and 10 opposite the nuts are formed with semi-circular portions 16 and 17 to co-act with semi-circular portions 18 and 19 for holding the members 9 and 10 in place, suitable bolts being provided for clamping members 16 and 18 together and also members 17 and 19 together. It will be observed that the bolts 9 and 10 support the air mixer and one side of the burner 2, while the other side of the burner 2, is supported by suitable adjustable legs 20 and 21. Legs 20 and 21 slidably fit into projections 22 and 23 and are clamped therein b suitable set screws 24 and 25,

One of the stars of the burner 2 is provided with an extension 26 formed with an aperture for accommodating a pintle 27 The pintle 27 extends through the opposite sides 28 and 29 of the lever 30, so as to pivotally mount the lever on the burner. The lever 30 is provided with divided portions or sides 28 and 29, so as to cause the lever to be more evenly balanced. The lever 30 is provided with raised port- ions 31 and 32, through which the pintle 27 projects in order to position sides 28 and 29 below the upper edge of the burner and thus maintain the same in a substantially cooled condition.
The lever 30 at one end carries a weight 33 and at the other an apertured enlargement 34 in which the stem 35 of the contact member 36 is fitted. A suitable set screw 37 is provided for clamping the stem 35 in any desired adjustment. Descending down: wardly from the lever 30*, preferably near a point opposite the pintle 27, are arms 38.
These arms are designed to extend to a posi-' tion between the stops 39 and 40 mounted on an adjustable sleeve 41. By this means whenever the lever 30 is moved pivotally, the sleeve 41 will be moved back and forth A set screw 42 is provided on sleeve 41 for clamping the sleeve 41 rigidly to a shaft 43, carrying a needle 44. The needle 44 is provided with a pointed end 45 having a flattened portion 46, adapted to maintain an open space or passageway in member 7 notwithstanding the fact that the pointed portion or end 45 has been seated in member 7. This permits a continued flow of gas as long as the valve 4 is open, so as to maintain a small flame in all of the jets of the burner, so that when a pan or other article is placed on member 36 and the same is depressed, the in-rushing gas may be freely ignited.
In operation when it is desired to light the burner, valve 4 is turned on and if desired the weight 33 may be raised manually allowing a full flow of gas until the gas has been properly ignited. After the gas has been properly ignited, the weight 33 is lowered, which will cause the needle 44 to seat itself in member 7 and thus shut off all but a small supply of gas. The burner is then ready to be used. Then the pot, pan or other article is placed on the stove, the same will first engage the contact 36 and depress the same and then rest on the top of the stove 1. The depression of member 36 will cause the lever 30 to be moved pivotally and the needle 44 to be withdrawn from its seat and thus permit a free flow of the gas. The gas will. continue to flow freely as long as the article is over the burner and may be regulated to any desired extent by movement of the valve 4 in the usual manner. However, whenever the pan or other article is removed from the stove, even though only for a moment, the fire will be turned down to a minimum and thus accomplish a saving of gas. It will be noted that the automatic cut-off embodying the invention does not in any way affect the usual operation of the ordinary valve 4, as the same may be turned on full or to any desired extent. The use of the cut-off is only for allowing a full flow of gas when the burner is in use and for causing a minimum flow of gas when the burner is not in use and is lighted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: V
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a burner, a supply pipe, a valve connected with said supply pipe, a pair of clamping members connected with said burner and said supply pipe for rigidly connecting said burner with said supply pipe, supporting legs arranged on the opposite side of said burner to said clamping members, and means for adjustably locking said legs in position.
2. In an automatic cut-of]. for gas burners, the combination with a burner formed with an ear extending therefrom having an aperture therein, a gas supply pipe and a valve for regulating the flow from said supply pipe to said burner, of an auxiliary valve, a needle valve for regulating said auxiliary valve, a lever for actuating said needle valve, said lever being formed with a pair of apertured projections, a weight on one side of said apertured projections, an arm for actuating said needle valve, and a journal member arranged on the opposite end of said lever to said weight, an adjustable contact member fitting into said journal member, said adjustable contact member being adapted to be depressed by an article placed over said burner whereby said lever is moved against the action of said weight and said needle valve is moved to an open position, and means passing through the apertured projections of said lever and through the aperture in said ear on said burner for pivotally connecting said lever to said burner.
3. In an automatic cut-off for gas burners, the combination of a gas burner and a supply valve, of an auxiliary valve through which the gas of said supply valve must pass, a lever formed with a pair of depending arms for engaging the said auxiliary valve for actuating the same, said lever being formed with a raised portion, a jourplane below the upper surface of said burner, 21 Weight for tending to hold said lever in a predetermined position and said Valve structure closed, and an adjustable contact member connected With said lever 5 for moving the lever in opposition to said Weight.
