AUTOMATIC DEVICE FOR RAISING ILLUMINATING-FLAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,492, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed November 2, 1885. Serial No. 181,695.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Josnrnc BAOHNER, a citizen of the Republic of France,who has declared his intention to become a cit zen of the United States, residir in Gnicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Alarm-Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to combine a clock and a gas-burner in such manner that the alarm mechanism of the clock will operate the burner-valve at any stated or predetermined time, and thus automatically permit or cause the burner to burn brightly and with full power. I accomplish this by attaching the clock to the burner, and providing the alarm of the former with appropriate devices whereby motion may be communicated from the alarm to the burner-valve in such manner as to open the latter; and the invention, in its broad aspect, may be said to consist in the combination of a clock or clock-lnovement with a gas-burner, the alarm of the former being connected to the valve of the latter by suitable devices, whereby motion is carried from the alarm to the valve.
Theinvention will be more fully understood from the subjoined description and the accompanying drawings, in the latter whereof Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention,
and Fig. 2 a section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar elevation of the invention applied to an Argand burner.
In said drawings, A represents a clock, which 'may be one of the cylinder-clocks now very commonly used. It is suspended from or attached to the burner by any suitable means, such as the bracket shown, consisting of the bent plate B and arms B. The plate B may have openings I), to permit the feet (6 of the clock to pass through,and the body thereof to rest directly on the plate.

The clock is equivalent mechanism adapted to operate automatically when the predetermined hour ar rives, and D is the winding-shaft thereof. This shaft carries a thumb-piece or handle, D, which I make long enough so that one or both ends will contact with the arm a of the valve. WVith this assemblage and contiguity of the parts named the alarm mechanism will, through the arm a of the valve as to turn the latter and permit the full flow of gas and the brightening of the light by the ignition of the main tip from the auxiliary tip 0. Of course an alarm-bell, D, may be used with the alarm mechanism, if desired,aud in that case audible as well as visible evidence is afl'orded of the arrival of the hour for which the alarm was set.

I claim- The combination of a clock having an alarm and an alarm-winder, D, with a gas-burner provided with a valve having an operative device, such as c or c, to engage with said winder, substantially as specified.
