Be it known that I, IsAAo Pos'rLE'rrIwArr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Mayville, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are to provide a strong and durable metallic tie for supporting the confronting ends of rails, and to furnish the tie with fasteners that will brace the rails and preserve the alinement thereof. I
Further objects of my invention are to provide a metallic tie that can be easily and quickly tamped in a roadbed, andto use fasteners in connection with the tie that cannot become accidentally displaced but will prevent lateral and longitudinal" displacement of rails mounted thereon.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the tie, partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a plan of the tie and rail fasteners, with one of the fasteners partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 3 is a plan of a portion of the tie, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a detached boltdesigned for the tie.
A tie in accordance with this invention is of the channel type comprising a top plate 1 and side walls 2. The side walls 2 are cut away, as at 3 intermediate the ends of the tie, and the lower edges of the side walls 2 are provided with lateral reinforcing ribs or flanges 4. The side walls 2, at the ends of the tie, are connected by transverse bars 5, and said walls have vertical ribs 6 that add rigidity to the side walls 2 adjacent to the bars 5.
The plate 1 of the tie, adjacent to each end thereof, is adapted to support the base :fl'anges. 7 of rails 8, said rails having the ends thereof abutting centrally of the tie. The base flanges 7 are provided with notches 9, adjacent to the ends thereof, the object of which will 1 of the tie outer end thereof, said top plate has transverse toothed grooves 11.
Arranged upon the top plate 1 and bracing the outer sides of the rails 8 is an outer rail fastener 12 that has a lateral portion 18 extending into close proximity to the end of the tie. pending transverse tongue 14 that engages in one of the grooves 11 of the top plate 1. The outer fastener extends on to the base flanges 7 of the rails 8 and has lugs 15 fitting in the notches 9 of the base flanges 7. The lugs 15 prevent longitudinal displacement of one rail relatively to the other, and to prevent the outer fastener from becoming accidentally displaced, I resort to the use of bolts 16 having large heads 17. The bolts 16, adjacent to the heads 17 have offset portions 18 that cooperate with the bolts in completely filling the slots 10 in which the bolts are placed. The bolts 16 extend upwardly through openings 19 provided therefor in the lateral extension 13 of the outer fastener 12.
The inner sides of the rails 8 are braced and held by an inner rail fastener 21, and this fastener has lugs 22 and a fastening means 23 similar to the outer rail fastener 12. The inner rail fastener is identical in construction to the outer rail fastener, with the exception that the transverse tongues 14 are dispensed with, also the inner fastener is of a less height than the outer fastener, in order not to interfere with the flanged whiael of rolling stock that passes over the ra1 s.

WVhat I claim is 1. In a tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails having the base flanges thereof at the ends provided with notches, of an inverted channel bar supporting the base flanges of said rails, said bar having the side walls thereof cut away, lateral flanges carried by the lower edges of the side Walls of said bar, a transverse bar connecting the side walls of said tie at the ends thereof, the top of said tie having slots formed therein, an outer fastener arranged upon the top of said tie and bracing the outer sides of said rails, lugs carried by said" outer fastener and engaging in the notches in the outer base flanges of said rails, bolts arranged in the top of said tie and extending through said outer fastener, nuts screwed upon said bolts, an inner fastener arranged upon the top of said tie and bracing the inner sidesof said rails, lugs carried by said inner fastener and engaging in the notches of the inner base flanges of said rails, bolts arranged in the top of said tie and extending through said inner fastener, and nuts screwed upon said bolts.
2. In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails having the base flanges thereof provided with nuts, of an inverted channel-shaped bar supporting the base flanges of said rails, said bar having the top thereof provided with slots, and adjacent to the outer ends thereof with transverse grooves, outer and inner rail fasteners arranged upon the top of said bar and bracing the sides of said rails, lugs formed integral with said outer and inner rail fasteners and extending into the notches of the base flanges of said rails, a depending tongue carried by the outer rail fastener and engaging in one of the grooves of said bar, bolts anchored in the top of said bar and extending through the outer ends of said fasteners, and nuts screwed upon the upper ends of said bolts for retaining said bolts and said fasteners in position upon the top of said bar.
