WINDOW-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent."
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Application led June 17, 1912. Serial No. 704,079.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it vknown that I, FRANK GALLowAY, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Glenwood, Leamington, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My window fastener of improved construction is designedto absolutely prevent the locking bar being sprung or forced back by the insert-ion of a knife blade or other instrument between the sashes..
My invention consists in providing a stop on the inner plate and hinging the locking bar so that it can be turned up from the inside to pass over the stop to open the sashes. The locking bar is hinged over the inner plate so that in its closed position the hinge cannot be tampered with from the outside. The stop also has a rounded back so that the locking bar can mount same without lifting up the hinged portion when pulling back into a locked position.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1. is a front elevation of my improved window fastener, Fig. 2. is a plan with knob and terminal in section and also showing locking bar in dotted lines up against its stop, and Fig. 8. is a side sectional elevation.
The inner and outer sashes l and 2 of the window 3 have plates 4 and 5 screwed on to them. The outer plate 5 with its stopguard 6 is as usual, but the inner plate 4 in addition to its cockspur 7 has a projecting stop 8 formed on and with same with a sharply cut presented face 9 and a curved back 10. The locking bar 11 with knob 12 and termina-113 is pivoted at 14 on the outer plate 5 against the action of a spring 15 as usual. This locking bar is hinged at 16 in such a way that the knob portion when free from its cockspur 7, can be lifted upward, from the inside, in order to clear the stop 8 to open the sashes.
The joint 16 is made just over the inner plate 4 so as to prevent tampering with from the outside and the back portion of the looking bar is broader than the knob portion. In its horizontal position this locking bar Cannot be pushed back farther than its stop 8 as shown in dotetd lines in Fig. 2. so that it is impossible to push same back by a knife inserted between the sashes. In relocking, the locking bar can be pulled back over the rounded portion 10 of the stop without lifting up the knob portion.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a window fastener of the type described the use of a hinged or articulated locking bar pivoted on the outer plate inI conjunction with a stop on the inner plate substantially as described and set forth.
2. In a window fastener of the type described the combination with a stop on the inner plate of a locking bar pivoted on the outer plate which is so hinged that the knob portion can be turned upward from the inside to clear the stop and openthe sashes substantially as described and set forth in the drawings.
In testimony whereof I have afiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK GALLOWAY.
